It had a story. I was just missing some of the dialogue. There were basically parts like "Tony and Obedia talk about stuff" and then the actors had to improvise the lines, figure out what their characters would say. It's a neat approach. Usually they have a script with lines but even then most of the times the actors improvise.

A completed film is an interpretation of a script, not a direct copy. That's why directors and directing are more relevant than writers and scripts when discussing film, writers do not participate in the filmmaking itself, they just provide blueprints.

Iron Man's aged poorly. It's almost like X-Men 1 and Spider-Man 1 in that regard.
It benefits from lack of hype when it first came out and being much better than expected. The movie took Iron Man from being semi-obscure to being very popular. If you take that away from it, it's a powerfully average action movie.
