that's exactly why it's good. He's there for a one-note joke: he just turns up because he wants a job and only works there to get paid. He doesn't give a shit about ghosts or science or anything, and the story is about the other three guys.
'Bad' diversity would be forcing the character into a major role as the unnecessary best friend of the protagonist, or some high-up government position for progress points

This was my biggest irritation with the sequel. He's only in it once until the courthouse scene then he fucks off again while they fight the ghosts then all of a sudden he's with them again.
In the first he was supposed to be our eyes into the world of ghostbusters and when they changed the script his role was lessened. Whatever.
The sequel is when they failed with him.
But "DA DEVIL IZ ALI-AVE!!" Is in no way better.

Disney also hired actors before JJ Abrams was brought on board. Jesse Plemons was supposed to play him but got replaced by Boyega when JJ was put in charge.
