The cave is an allegory for her coma, and at the end she is unable to escape it, preferring to live in the fantasy where she can still see her child while also recognizing it is a fantasy than to wake up and return to the waking world where her family is dead.
There were no monsters. Her friends never went into a cave. It is made absolutely clear that she's still in her coma.
The sequel, though not nearly as good, still supports this, as she defaults back to a fantasy beginning in a hospital after the previous fantasy ends. She's still in her coma.

I don't know what you're trying to argue. Movies with fantasy elements are the opposite of strict realism, I was merely suggesting that you shouldn't confuse movies with reality. Descent isn't a documentary about cave explorers discovering a tribe of blind cannibals, it's a story about coping with severe trauma. You have to step back and recognise that the ENTIRE thing is fiction and that the cave expedition is allegorical.
