It was better for it. We got more interesting vegeta/goku character drama. Gohans character was also more interesting because instead of growing up to be goku 2.0 we see that's he's actually a pacifist who isn't interested in training or fighting. When he gets btfo during the buu saga it sends a powerful message about not slacking off in your training. Just because you were badass in the past doesn't mean you'll stay badass.
Plus they also establish him as having his own interests outside of fighting which makes for a more interesting character. He has these incredible gifts but doesn't take advantage of them even though he's expected to. When goku is cool with it and vegeta is furious at him, it's leads up to an exciting scene that parallels the struggles that parents and children have with following each other's expectations. Scenes like that are why I'll remember every line of dbz word for word until I'm 70 but try hard edgy bullshit like evangelion and ghost in the shell will fade out of my mind. Dbz is a modern heroic classic like the epic of Gilgamesh or Beowulf. Truly one of the greatest pieces of fiction the twentieth century has produced.
