Leia tried to keep being Vader's daughter on the down low and didn't inform anyone, while trying to still be a politician in the New Republic Senate. A rival royal of hers finds a treasure left by Bail Organa that was intended to explain all of the familial relations when Leia got old enough but she never received it. This other noble lady outs the information to the Senate while in session, causing them to basically disregard Leia permanently. Leia basically loses her power, and this other rival lady who actually is key to starting the First Order snags it.
The senate is split a lot like the Republicans and Democrats in the US senate, where Leia's party is the "States' Rights" party, and the other lady's party in the 'Big Government" party, and the plan is to secede the "Big Gov't" party to create the First Order.

Guys, I'm conflicted. Rey is an insufferable Mary Sue who's completely boring to watch even as she's effortlessly outperforming the original trilogy characters in every single way. Finn in a disgustingtraitorwho callously murders his own brothers-in-arms in cold blood despite being ostensibly sympathetic to the plight of the civilians they kill. I don't remember any of the other hero cast, except for Han Solo (the only decent character) and the various Yoda/R2D2/etc. ripoffs.
But Kylo Ren is a whiny bitch who destroys valuable Imperial hardware with his dumb little tantrums, he killed the only character that I liked, and he defiles the infinitely superior Darth Vader by trying to emulate him. Ren's master is a boring, generic 'big bad alien overlord'. The silver stormtrooper chick hasn't provided any fanservice whatsoever, and is boring in all other respects as well. And the First Order as a whole made the stormtrooper outfits uglier and stole way too much from the Nazis, yet replaced the iconic Nazi salute with the retarded Power Rangers nonsense it has now, which, ironically, looks like the red/socialist salute.
I can't support either side. They're both equally unlikable. At least in the original trilogy, I could root for the Empire because they were a fun villain faction, and the heroes were charismatic as well. But here, it's all teen wangst and almost nothing else. Like those obnoxious Young Adult films that (ostensibly) went out of style.
