Cage is expressive, demanding of attention. A kind of scene-stealer. He's an actor's actor.
But, that's not the best tone or avenue for a protagonist in hero movies. Usually, the main character is very bland and without characteristics, and as a result, it's easier for the audience to identify with it. Once the audience identifies with the protagonist, all of the emotional ups and downs have more impact and the story is more satisfying.
and in retrospect, all Cage's weakest movies were ones where he was some kind of hero, and Keanu's weak in movies where he's supposed to have range or play a character.
