Twin Peaks and The Sopranos are the two best television shows of all time. Truly patrician, this also includes FWWM.

Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows, but it's flawed. Its setting and cast of characters are both among the best, though. I would say The Sopranos and Mad Men are the two GOATs if I'm being objective.

>>
>>69788462
What would you say the flaws are? Please do not post that stupid meme with the chart of episodes. I can only think of a few Tbh. The James storyline in season 2 was a drag, Audrey and Coop never hooking up when it seemed as if the show was building towards it, and the lack of closure at the end of S2 but, that is due to it being canceled by CBS.
>>
>>69788607
What I mean is: you included it despite it being nowhere near the quality of the other shows listed, hence trying to sneak it in as though it was.
>>
>>69787439
Breaking Bad you pleb.
>>
>>69788649

Lynch/Frost had to retool the story they wanted told due to network meddling and the drama among the cast (basically just LFB). They were either not heavily involved or not heavily interested during the season 2 doldrums, which that chart actually displays. Laura's killer being revealed early sucked, too, because it clearly wasn't their intention (even though that episode is great).

Even though the flaws weren't their actual fault, they're still flaws. From the beginning of the show, the two most lasting dynamics were clearly meant to be the Laura mystery and Audrey/Coop's relationship. They were both compromised.

Season 2 was also filled with stupidity and what seemed like filler. I understand their intention to explore the other lives of Twin Peaks, but most weren't pulled off well. (Nadine, James, even Catherine's mill plot started to drag). Don't get me wrong, I love Twin Peaks, but I have to call a spade a spade. Being incomplete is also a flaw, but once again, that was out of their control. I hope they're given complete power over the 2017 episodes.

Twin Peaks was also on ABC, not CBS. Not that it matters, but all shows are put through the broadcast TV grinder regardless of network.
>>
Twin Peaks is probably the greatest television show, with Mad Men and The Wire behind it. The Sopranos is garbage

>>
>>69789013
I will agree with you about James, Nadine and Laura's killer being revealed too early. I just don't think it's as bad as everybody makes it out to be, maybe it's because I absolutely love most of the characters and the setting. Different strokes for different folks I guess. What did you think of FWWM?
>>
>>69789209

Yeah, I love Twin Peaks, and I'll never skip those episodes when rewatching, but I consider them weak. I just think that people weren't ready for a TV show like that when it aired. The network and viewers both lost patience, because it was a time when everyone were used to Scooby-Doo mystery-of-the-day structures in similar shows.

I couldn't imagine a guy like David Lynch being hired nowadays and having so little creative control. Right from the very beginning, they were a pain in the ass with the population on the Twin Peaks sign.

And I like FWWM, but I understand why it's so divisive among fans. If you asked me if I wanted the new episodes to be closer in tone to the original series or FWWM, I'd say the original series, though. I honestly think that's one area where being on broadcast TV actually helped. The inability to portray real violence and vulgarity gave the show its charm, and I think that the horrible things happening in the town being left to the imagination was a real strength.

Either way, I can't wait for the new season, and even the book coming out in the fall.

But here's the thing i dont understand from the Lara Flinn Boyle drama about then boyfriend McLachlan's romance with Sherilin Fenn on screen:

Copper instead of having an affair with Audrey, ends up having an affair with Annie in season 2. Heather fucking Graham herself with her massive boobs and still barely an adult. That was somehow more acceptable for LFB than Sherylin Fenn? I don't get this.
>>
>>69787439
nah. Twin Peaks ranks wayyyy lower. it's charming as shit, but most of the writing is weak, acting bad, poorly directed early episodes, etc. i love the Lynch episodes but it's no great series. the only interesting minutes in the entire first season was the first episode and Coop's dream. everything else, and i mean EVERYTHING ELSE, was dull, if somewhat charming. i have no idea why Twin Peaks ranks so high among people unless they haven't seen it in a while and are wearing their nostalgia goggles.
>>
>>69789066
Star Trek is WAAAAY more liberal.
>>
>>69789547

Yeah, which means that Kyle's fake reasoning was bullshit, and that he was just being whipped by Lara Flynn Bitch who didn't get along with Sherilyn Fenn. So glad she's JUSTed and not part of the new episodes.

I think the new season is going to be great, a little disappointed that The man from another place won't be in it. Also I assume they will be recasting Donna (Again!) and Bob. I just hope that Based Bobby Briggs plays a big role in the new season he was always my favorite side character in TP, hopefully he will live up to the Major's (RIP) vision of him.

>>
>>69789066
so let me get this straight

The super liberal wet dream tv series is being applauded more now than the theocratic space war movie, just because they decided to have one black actor star in a leading role?

That's not backwards at all
>>
>>69790701
By that logic Twin Peaks doesn't count.

>>69793112

It doesn't, but the movie and the upcoming book and episodes to fill out the lore will give it more of a claim.

i'm really perplexed as to its mass appeal. i think maybe nostalgia comes into play. i recently watched the first season and it was rather dull and dated, and not in a good way. like i said before, it has its charm but does not excel in anything. i also appreciate it some but cannot rank it among the other tv greats.

The music is god tier
The cast is perfect
The tone is unique

I'm guessing you were born after it first aired. You lack the context of tv at that time. There was nothing like it. This is a time in which Baywatch and Cheers were fighting for best tv series. The Cosby Show was extremely popular. The Simpsons had just began it's first season. If you wanted a mature tv show you had to watch the news instead. There was no mature tv drama series.
Twin Peaks changed everything. It was an international success almost instantly in a time without internet, without social media. It achieved so much in so little time under such constraints, it was a TV miracle. There is nostalgia involved for sure, but this was a gamechanger, and a cultural phenomenon praised internationally. No wonder there is mass appeal to this day.

i watched it after it aired, yes, but i'm in my late 20's, so i guess i was around when it aired, i just didn't watch it. i can appreciate the show but i still think it lacks the timeless quality of great works, mainly due to its poor quality acting and writing. i keep on repeating that it is charming, it is, but let's not confuse that with stellar narrative. the music was great, though. the cast, i don't know about. a great portion of the secondary characters - the tall, skinny cop, the receptionist, the black eyed jake's madame, Leo, Renault's brother, Diane - were not great actors by any means. i mean, a show like Deadwood had a slew of periphery characters and they all sold you on the narrative. Twin Peaks, not so much. well, for me, anyhow. what i get out of the show is that it uses the tropes of a soap opera - Invitation to Love - but gets weighed down by its own intentions and muddled narrative.

Best modern drama series in my opinion (even though it's very much a comedy as well), but I haven't watched The Americans yet, which I've heard very good things about on /tv/ and elsewhere. The acting it's bad on pourpose? the idea of the series is to be that akward?
I really want to understand why everyone loves this series.
>>
>>69794919
not b8ing, mate. i got some names wrong, one eyed jake's, Diane, oops, i meant Nadine with that one, the lady with the eye patch. i'm watching the series now on Netflix for the second time, i saw it before about a decade ago, and i'm currently on the second season's first episode - directed by Lynch, which makes it bearable, especially the campy scene when the brothers dance to Laura's father singing a dandy tune - but i don't see greatness at work. the series has its quirks and, ahem, its charm, yet lacks quality performances. while i often dig meandering narratives, in Twin Peaks case, it hasn't gelled with me. anyways, i won't shit on it anymore. to each their own. i look forward to the new season, though, because i really like Lynch's work. i just think Twin Peaks is his weakest effort.
>>
>>69795303
yeah, like i said here >>69789671 and here
>>69795305, i'm also at a loss as to why it's revered so. the pilot really feels dated, as does the first season. the dream sequence was pretty cool, though, but you have to get through a bunch of episodes to see it.
>>
>>69794812
I dont know wtf is up with you people and deadwood. comparing it with Twin Peaks is silly. There is nothing quite like Twin Peaks. It's like comparing a complex Dali painting with a bottle of ketchup as far as I am concerned
>>
>>69795601
both are serial, episodic narratives conveyed through the medium of television. i'd say it's more fitting to compare the two than a bottle and a painting.

look, don't take offense. it's okay if you like it more than others, but i think my criticisms are sound and valid. if you appreciate the show more than i do, so be it.
>>
>>69795488
i'm glad i'm not alone.
>>
>>69795488
It's a subversive take on melodramatic soap operas that's why the heightened performances and campy nature of subplots and characters. The show purposely does not feel like the 90's rather trying to evoke a quasi 50's feeling.
>>
>>69795876
I see what you mean, but it's a bit of a pointless exercise. This isn't classical painting.
The Twilight Zone is also a tv series and yet you'd have a very hard time to compare it to anything modern.
That you have a bigger connivance to a material from your time simply makes sense in an of itself. Ultimately it's about opinions. For you there isn't great acting in TP, for me there is plenty starting with Agent Cooper. Opinions see.
But you will have a hard time convincing me that deadwood is crafted by a better artist than David Lynch and a better writer than Mark Frost. It's a silly game to play given how subjective this all is.
This is what I meant, the bottle image was just pushing the trait.
>>
>>69796246
So it's bad on pourpose?
I have to endurance trough bad performances on pourpose to enjoy a campy story?.
To meta for me.
>>
>>69796313
it is sometimes campy/satyrical by design yes. If one day you become familiar with Lynch's work, you will notice this phenomenon occurring several times in several of his works. Lynch has a very precise idea of what some call Americana, an idea of America. In his case it's very tied with the fifties and the golden age of Hollywood.
To give you one example amongst hundreds in TP, the character Lynch plays, Agent Gordon Cole, the name Gordon Cole is the name of one character in the movie Sunset Boulevard by Billy Wilder. This is a subtle one, some are more obvious.
>>
>>69796313
Well it takes the cliches and melodrama and twists it just enough so genuine pathos shines through. A scene can switch from comedy to touching in seconds without it seeming jarring. But beneath the camp and quirky flourishes there is a rock solid exploration of the duality of good and evil both outwards and within as the mythology grows.

for my part, i'd take David Milch over Mark Frost any day. Milch has written some of the greatest dialogue in the medium, mate. from his early days in Hill Street Blues, alongside Frost, to NYPD Blue, Deadwood, Luck, and John From Cincinnati. really stellar stuff. check his work out when you have the chance.
