Why didn't Taxi Driver shoot the politician with a sniper rifle like JFK?
He wasn't really a man with a plan, he just went by impulse to whatever course of action seemed to make sense at the time, and he was kind of influenced by those he had contact with.
He bought a gun because of Wizard's advice, a 44. Magnun specifically, because of the guy (Scorsese) whose wife was cheating on him with a nigger, who said he'd kill her with said gun; and he only wanted to shoot Palantine because he was the candidate Betsy stood for, and he acquired a growing distaste for the woman after she dumped him.
Also, he saw Palantine as a crooked and hypocrite politician.

...578 was on the right track mainly, Travis never forms a unique thought for himself in the whole movie, everything he does is an attempt to copy someone he admires. The guy with the .44, the record, the customers going to the porno, supporting palantine. And once he is rejected by the girl, he lashes out half-cocked at her father figure. Travis is no genius, and when he fails at his show of "true force" against Palantine and the secret service, he turns to the father figure of Iris, Sport. Sport is a much easier target, but even him and the other criminals nearly kill Travis. I don't think him trying to kill Palantine was the point what-so-ever, nor was him killing Sport. Your question is quite silly.
Was going to watch this again soon. Anything I should look out for or be aware of on a repeat viewing?

most people who do things like what Travis do, have "walk through" moments, like practicing, more than conviction.
It's actually rather eerie thinking you could be in one of those moments at anytime, which makes the film more realistic and creepy as fuck.
