Movie starts off slow with goofy training exercises with very low-tiered ghosts and steamrolls into an encounter bigger and more malevolent than anything the Ghostbusters have been involved with. Villain ends up being an actual demon from Hell.

New team - two females. Let's even stick with casting McCarthy and McKinnon.
There are literally hundreds of ghostbuster teams working in modern New York. People just buy proton packs and ghost hunting licences now.
McCarthy and McKinnon are literally Fembusters - being the only female ghostbuster team is their gimmick. They are barely scraping through.
They take a call from an old lady, ghostbusting ensues, they learn that New York is in mortal danger - a new bad thing is coming. Nobody believes them. They decide to consult the man who owns the Ghostbusting franchise. He refuses them, and is revealed to be Walter Peck, who purchased patents from original Ghostbusters years ago, and turned it into business. McCarthy and McKinnon set out to find the members of the original team.
They eventually find Peter Venkman, who lives in practical poverty. He is grumpy - Peck basically swindled them all on a deal, and he want's to do nothing with ghost hunting anymore, but eventually gives them advice, how to defeat the bad thing.

During the final confrontation with Big Bad thing they try to fight it on their own, but fail. They need more people. They call every GB team in NY - hundreds of ghostbusters join them, McCarthy takes on commanding duties, they all work together. No effect. McKinnon understands, that simply doing what Venkman told them is not enough - they need to do something very dangerous (much more dangerous, than crossing the streams). All ghostbusters agree, they are doing the dangerous thing, WORKING TOGETHER. The Big Bad is hurt, but struggling. Suddenly, 3 more proton streams join the rest - its Venkman, Stantz and Zeddemore in their old uniforms. The Big Bad is finally defeated. Everyone is covered in slime. McCarthy and McKinnon are celebrated by other ghostbusters as heroes.
Peck is revealed to be the mastermind behind the Big Bad and arrested. He tried to summon more ghosts to make his business more profitable.
The final scene is McCarthy and McKinnon, now successful, moving into the firehouse building and discussing adding more members to the team.
