Hey /cannes/ I tried to make a thread but I got literally no response so I want to ask here since the film left me so bewildered (Tropical Malady):
I watched this last night /tv/ and I have to ask: what the fuck was that first half?
It took me three separate viewings to get past the 40 minute mark, and once I did I was enthralled for the remainder of the film because admittedly that last half is incredible, inspired filmmaking. But what on EARTH was that first half?
The whole thing was shot like two povo thai kids making their own music video for a Death Cab for Cutie song. Their dialogue was awkward and the acting of the non-soldier was so profoundly bad; the soldier wasn't great but next to that spastic I would've given him an Oscar. Then there's that weird hand licking scene and the dentally-retarded boy slips into the shadows and you start to perk up a bit because it looks like the director woke up and suddenly the film turns into this brilliantly paced pseudo-horror.
I'm also wondering which of his films to watch next. Critically it looks like it should be either Uncle Boonmee or Cemetery of Splendour but I can't say I'm overly attracted to the latter.

When Miller was announced as president of the jury, a lot of people on social medias also complained or made fun of him, because he didn't fit the Cannes mold.
