imo the point of his character was to provide the audience a direct view of the sheer size and power of the monsters. In order for them to have an impact the size difference has to be stressed and displayed, hence all the scenes of AT-J sneaking around and barely avoiding getting crushed, while not really doing a whole lot himself. It's the best way to really capture the feeling of being in the shadow of these huge beasts.I'm a sizefag though, so I find a self-insert protagonist in that situation to be very familiar and relatable.
