So I recently had a discussion with a person who is very involved with Lucasfilm that I know very personally. In that discussion he gave me some insight on concepts and ideas for the upcoming Star Wars movies. Specifically the "Star Wars Stories" or "Anthology" movies.

Now bear with me, because I don't actually know a whole lot about Star Wars. I have just seen the movies, so I don't know how much of this is relevant to the fans of the books and stuff.

The definite upcoming movies are as follows:

>Rogue One
I'm sure you know plenty about this one already. Group of rebellion fighters on a task to steal the death star plans and stop production of the "Death Troopers"

>Episode 8
My source refused to give me ANY information on this except that it prominently features Luke. (He only told me that much because I specifically asked)

>Solo
A young Han Solo runs away from the imperial academy to find a more fulfilling life gambling away his life and running from his problems. Solo is the final name for the movie.

>Episode 9
Again, I know absolutely nothing about this one

>Obi Wan Kenobi 1-3
The first in a trilogy of movies following Obi Wan Kenobi as he protects a young Luke Skywalker. Supposedly the studio does not fully trust Obi Wan to succeed well in the box office, so they are prepared to make the second and third movies' stories into some other form of media like comics or books if the first one doesn't do very well. Because of that the first ones story is going to tie up and finish nicely by the end, even though its only the first part of a trilogy.
>>
>Rise of the Old Republic
A prequel movie to what is going to be a massive media blitz after the current Star Wars trilogy. The movie will follow multiple different kingdoms with warriors powerful in the force known as the "Jedi Knights". One of these kingdoms is the Sith Kingdom, who are recognizable by their iconic red lightsabers. According to my source, all lightsabers in this movie are going to have the Kylo Ren cross guard design. Supposedly this movie is actually very far into development, because Disney has plans to tie it in with multiple comics and book series, video games, and a possible tv show.

>TANO
Apparently it is essentially a remake of Episode 3 told from the perspective of Anakin Skywalkers apprentice, Asoka Tano.
This one is weird for me because I didn't know that Anakin had an apprentice. I'm assuming this was from a book or something.

Movies ideas that are either just being passed around, or are only in idea stages of development:

>Yoda, Dooku, and Qui Gon movies
There is a pretty popular idea floating around of a trilogy of movies following 3 generations of Jedi apprentices and masters. The movies could potentially detail Obi Wan being trained by Qui Gon, Qui Gon being trained by Dooku, and finally Dooku being trained by Yoda.

>Movie centered around illegal podracing
Thats pretty much all I got regarding that one

Also regarding the Boba Fett movie, the chances of it still happening are apparently very slim after major vision differences with Lucasfilm and the writers and director. Thats all I know about it though.
>>
>>69699776
I so hope the illegal podracing/qui gonn/dooku movies happen
>>

So it's a remake of a movie from the view point of a character that didn't even exist when said movie was made. Jesus christ.

If OP is legit, then the "Death Trooper" thing is a new bit of information.

TCW is as canon as Empire Strikes back and that's never going to change. TCW was Lucas's baby girl and he raised and nurtured it. You really think it would be rendered non-canon by the story group? Half the people there are still loyal to Lucas.

>>69703715
>your shitty cartoon is irrelevant and will never have anything to do with any future movie
You would have a point if Rebels didn't feature James Earl Jones replaying his role as Darth Vader and having him face off against Tano.

>>69703877
Technically you're right but the real order was TCW was the same level of canon as the movies. Everything else was EU. TCW never was EU it was always canon because Lucas worked directly on it.

This is EU insanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nahMMDYasM4

>Right, like comic and novel references appearing in the movies?
I really don't care about irrelevant references in the movies, like the Outrider, as they have no effect on the movies.

As far as the other way, there are only 2 I can think of. Blue Jedi chick, because George like the way she looked so he put her in the background of 2 movies, and the Couruscant name coming from the books, and it was just a name of a planet that existed conceptually since the 70's anyway.

>How?
Because the books, cartoons, comics, video games and whatever else do not matter and are just filler. They will never be relevant to the movies, and it makes no difference to the movies whether they exist or not. Nothing that happens in them will ever matter, and that is great.

That's the point dumbass. That is what they are doing, which is why they are minimizing prequel exposure, because the prequels don't matter. It will happen to the OT, but the OT will always have a use, while the PT will be forgotten with the decade.

>>69707196
The thing is Anthology isn't tied to any single time period. They can easily do extensions of the PT like they are with OT
>>
>>69707313
Of course they can, but that would be risky at this point. So far, all anthology crap is focused on OT, and characters that are iconic across generations and cultures. The first movie is going to get propped up by Vader, the best selling Star Wars character and the face of the franchise. The next two are Han Solo and the rumored Boba movies, which are pretty much number 2 and 3 when it comes to popularity.

I'm sure they will branch out eventually, but right now they are playing it super safe. And I expect that when they do, they will try to branch out into characters they created, just to make it easier on themselves.

How? Their major television show is essentially a continuation of TCW. With major characters and events from AOTC and ROTS.

>They have no real use for the PT
Wrong. See Rebels, young adult/junior novels and comics. They're using the kids nostalgia to push them into the new era. There are kids who have only seen TCW and nothing else. They're doing it too for the international audiences who prefer the prequels to the original trilogy.

>butthurt
I'm not but I'm tired of this "prequels hated and forgotten about" when the money proves otherwise. The audiences are split and Disney is profiting from it. Nothing good is coming out of this.

Rebels is also irrelevant to the movies, just like TCW. It's a continuation of TCW, because it's done by the same people. And it exists for the same rasonn TCW did, get kids into the franchise. Once they have them, they will hook them on Sequel Trilogy. And again, nothing in those cartoons actually has any bearing on the movies. No film will ever admit to the retardation of Darth Maul being alive in "canon," for example.

>Wrong. See Rebels, young adult/junior novels and comics. They're using the kids nostalgia to push them into the new era.
That's semantics. I know that is what they are doing, but to clarify, I meant that the PT is not getting any movies in the future. It's only use is transitioning people into Disney Star Wars.
>>
I understand that you people don't like TFA.
What I really love is it's originality though!
A father who must learn to stop hiding and face his son and his failure, even if it means dying. A young man who struggles to resist the good in himself because he is afraid of weakness. A girl who has to learn to make her own family instead of waiting for a family she'll never have. A young man, raised as a child soldier, runs from his evil upbringing, but learns to let go of his fear and fight them. All original stories.
The directing is original too. He uses an interesting shot sort of like Spielberg, where he gets various different shots all in the same camera movement. Example: we see X-Wings fighting Tie Fightes, then zoom out to see we're on Starkiller base with Hux. Then camera gets a closeup of him. Rotate over his shoulder to see a group of people. Refocus on them to here their dialogue. Zoom back in on Hux for a close up reaction shot. All in one take! It is better directed than the OT IMO.
It's the best paced Star Wars movie, better paced than any OT IMO. It moves along so quickly, everything we see is only what is fun to see, and most of it is only what we need to see. It's possibly the tightest movie of recent years in an era of 3 hour exposition epics.
It's the funniest Star Wars movie, funnier than any OT. I think ANH and ESB are extremely funny. This is funnier to me. Great dialogue by Kasdan and JJ. Hilariously delivered by the new cast. Shot well by JJ. Comedic gold IMO.
It has flaws though. The biggest one is almost no new lore developments. It's afraid to talk politics. It's also doesn't take the chance to expand the Force mythology at all. Also, aside from Jakku no real worlds that capture the eye (Maz's castle does, but Takadona doesn't). Also some of the basic plot framings, i.e. Starkiller, are unoriginal, and the Starkiller Run was less good than both OT Death Star runs.

Also, only reason they kept Darth Maul alive after that Rebels Season 2 finale is probably so they can save his death for one of the Kenobi movies. If you're gonna be stuck on Tatooine for three movies, gotta have something happen in at least one of them.

But this is your opinion. Lucasfilm and the storygroup disagree with you.

>No film will ever admit to the retardation of Darth Maul being alive in "canon," for example.
But this is subjective. Maul's return and arc were solidly written and compelling. His resurrection was actually from Lucas who felt he squandered his potential in TPM. This is all canon, whether you like it or not. Everything is being connected into a fluid and vast universe. Unlike the EU which was never canon to begin with.

> It's only use is transitioning people into Disney Star Wars.
Of course. They did their homework and their experience with the MCU is going to make them even more powerful with this franchise. You complain about canon but wait until Disney starts Netflix Star Wars shows too.

>>69708492
>only reason they kept Darth Maul alive after that Rebels Season 2 finale is probably so they can save his death
No, it's because they never finished his arc in TCW. The show was cancelled before they could finish it.
>>
>>69708185
They aren't using the same animation studio as TCW, it isn't airing on the same channel [Disney XD instead of Cartoon Network], not to mention TCW ceased marketing to kids after the beginning of the third season because kids weren't the major audience.

So you get shit like people dying, implied rape, etc.

Rebels is more kiddish, but it is based completely on the art style of the man who did concept art for the original trilogy. The only continuation of TCW are some secondary characters. It has WAY more tie-ins in the animation, planets, plot, and characters of the OT and KOTOR.

They abandoned the cheesy kiddish plots after the second season because once again, kids were not the primary audience they should have aimed for.

Most kids do not watch animation anymore, they watch live action single camera stage sit-coms.

Nickelodeon experienced the same troubles with Avatar: The Last Airbender and ESPECIALLY The Legend of Korra. Most of the characters were older than preteen children, the plot had too much heavy shit and too symbolic for kids to understand, so they got bored until the next bending fight scene happened.

Even then, once bending got more violent [sucking all the air out of people's lungs, blood bending, exploding someone's head inside of a metal helmet] parents were hesitant.

Animation studios really need to realize that some media should be catered to adults as well. At least Samurai Jack realized this and the new season will air on Adult Swim.

If Disney does not care about media outside of the core movies, why did they quietly purchase the rights to KOTOR 2 specifically to publish it again in October 2015 with links to the Restoration Mod?

And then in the most current season of Rebels that recently aired, referenced the shit out of KOTOR? Malachor, the ships that Leia acquired, the Sith Temple, the Kreia-esq voice with the Sith holocrons, and then the finale of Ezra using the dark side to activate the holocron?

Source? From what I recall they had the rights, and just wanted to sell it on steam.

>And then in the most current season of Rebels that recently aired, referenced the shit out of KOTOR?
Who cares? It has nothing to do with the movies. And technically, it retcons KotoR too as well, doesn't it? So this isn't exactly good news for Old Republic fans.

Old Republic fans are fucked either way, even Pablo pointed out how dumb KotoR era stuff was.

>Why spend money and go through effort to reference something obscure if they thought it would alienate fans?
Oh I get it. Again, I meant in movies. Putting this EU crap in movies can potentially alienate people, and gains them nothing in return. The only people that want this crap in the movies, are going to watch any movie with "Star Wars" in the title anyway. Also, I don't think are spending any money on this as they own it all, and so far they have kept old EU references in new EU, which again, doesn't affect the movies in any meaningful way.

I think that's wishful thinking. The story group has no real power, and everyone is subservient to Kathleen and the producers. Pablo won't ever tell a director he can't do something, he'll find a way to make whatever they want work. Business is far more important that canon after all.

>Disney and the Lucasfilm are really trying to make a coherent connected universe.
Well yeah, but it's by making sure the extended universe isn't anymore than filler that could potentially fuck with the movies.

>Like who?
Normies, the casual audience, the main demographic. Telling them that a guy that got cut in half is alive might backfire. It only really weakens the old movies and cheapens the universe. Telling them that there is 50 hours of cartoons, 10 comics and 5 books of shit they have to catch up on to understand why he is alive definitely will backfire. The people who will go so a movie with Maul will go to any Star Wars flick. And moving forward, creating new properties, is far less riskier too.

Think about it this way. What would the average person think if KotoR was adapted into a movie?

It would be "why the fuck is everything the same as the old movies but with slightly different names? Is this a remake?"

>by making sure the extended universe isn't anymore than filler
Again, this violates everything we've seen so far. The multimedia campaign disagrees with you. Severely. Everything is linked and connected no matter what you think.

>Normies, the casual audience, the main demographic
You don't know shit about this. They would explain it so fans understood what was going on. We've seen franchises execute this before.

>50 hours of cartoons, 10 comics and 5 books of shit they have to catch up on
That was 15 -20 years ago, it doesn't work like that now. Especially with how the MCU is being handled.
>>
>>69710470
If nitpicking is all they get to do, that only shows they have no real power over the direction of the movies. But to be fair, the movies are probably laid out in advance quite bit on the studio side, EU gets approved to do stuff that won't interfere with the movies, and the story group gets to ensure it doesn't fall apart too much. They don't get to veto anything, just plug in background lore details like they did in your example.

I mean come on, let's not pretend Disney will actually care about the coherency of the universe to a degree that could cost the money.
>>
>>69710369
Malachor has five planets. The calamity specifically happened on V.

I also see you ignored the quote where one of the main screenwriters for Rogue: One is writing episodes for Rebels, whereas he was not before.

Also, Disney has had MASSIVE success doing this with Marvel. Daredevil has done great in both seasons, Jessica Jones great too [despite it being the inferior show]. Why wouldn't they cash in with Netflix again, with another successful Americana series that has slews of material to work with that you don't even need to make up completely original shit for.

I also never stated there would be a KOTOR movie. I find it much more likely the Old Republic to be referenced or featured in an episode or two of some kind of Netflix show. Netflix is slowly shrinking its library and increasing its original works.
>>
>>69710731
Let's agree to disagree, the disagreement is semantics anyway and time will prove me right anyway. Just remember, the movies will never care about non-movies.

> Especially with how the MCU is being handled.
Exactly, the MCU is a great example of Star Wars canon will be handled, as it will be exactly the same way. And the MCU movies can't even keep track of plots from other MCU movies, lol, much less TV shows.
>>
>>69710583
>bringing back dead characters for no reason.
Other shows do it, and also, it was not "no reason."

Doctor Who would not be running still for 50+ years if characters previously thought dead or worse coming back to life alienated normies or fans.
>>
>>69710773
>I also see you ignored the quote where one of the main screenwriters for Rogue: One is writing episodes for Rebels, whereas he was not before.
Oh wow, so it's a one way street like I said. Doesn't change the fact that nothing from Rebels affects Rogue One.

And again, this is a one way street and exemplifies what I am saying. The movies do not even acknowledge Daredevil or Jessica Jones. It makes no difference to the story of any MCU film if those show exist or not. Hell, Civil War even fucks with the continuity of tv shows too to a certain degree.

In any case, this is exactly how it will work in Star Wars. Movies simply won't care about any canon that isn't a prior movie, just like they do it Marvel.

>I find it much more likely the Old Republic to be referenced or featured in an episode or two of some kind of Netflix show.
I can see that too, but the again, that show won't be mentioned in the movies either way.
>>
>>69710815
Disney is actually very careful with references and continuity between MCU and TV shows, and even different characters in different shows.

It is only the comics they aren't always in line with every timeline, because there are like 5 iterations of the same hero by different authors. But within their own universe they are keeping internal consistency. At least between the Netflix shows, ABC shows, and the Disney releases.

Even though they don't technically acknowledge Deadpool as part of their MCU, careful steps were taken to ensure it did not violate existing movies.
>>
>>69711097
>Disney is actually very careful with references and continuity between MCU and TV shows

Sure, but what difference does it makes when the movies don't care?

What's the difference between a TV show or comic book that is canon, but never acknowledge by the movies and a TV show or comic book that is not canon and never acknowledged by the movies? Star Wars or MCU.

The only real difference I see is the probably increased consumption by duping people into thinking the tv show/ comic book is important. So sure don't blame Disney for doing this, it's smart businessmen, but I think actions speak louder than words; and their policy when it comes to canon and the movies seems pretty clear.

Riddle me this, /tv/: why do people say The Force Awakens was better than the prequels?

Is it just the body of elaborate hatred built up for the prequels over the years, such as the Plinkett videos?

The prequels were seriously flawed films, but there was at least some ambition to tell a new story and take risks to create something original and different.

The Force Awakens is a cookie-cutter reboot. I felt much as I did watching the new Robocop: there was no artistic motivation to create this film. It was purely made as a way to extract cash from audiences.

Like the prequels, it actively made the originals worse. It taught us new and stupid things about the force. The Phantom Menace had a stupidly supercompetent child succeeding at things for no reason. The Force Awakens had a stupidly supercompetent rural orphan girl succeeding at things for no reason. The prequels gave us pouty teen Vader killing Jedi students and a loved one to commit to the dark side, TFA gave us pouty twenty-something Vader Jr. killing Jedi students and a loved one to commit to the dark side. TPM and TFA both had too much fucking nonsense going on in parallel, none of which made a lick of sense. The prequels had obnoxiously obvious CGI characters on the screen half the time. TFA has obnoxiously obvious CGI characters on the screen half the time. The Special Editions and prequels both had unnecessary visual clutter undermining the stark elegance of the Star Wars style. TFA has unnecessary visual clutter undermining the stark elegance of the Star Wars style.

The Force Awakens is just the prequels with an older cast.

I enjoyed the prequels overall, particularly the music made them worth watching. I also found certain aspects of them thought-provoking. They just weren't nearly as good as the original trilogy.

If I could go back in time and tell myself not to bother watching The Force Awakens, I would get those two wasted hours back.

I got nothing out of it. The minor adjustments to the old music (taken from both original trilogy and prequels) were basically just watering it down... and that can pretty much be said for every other aspect.

They even fucked up the title crawl. In every other Star Wars, it was about the big picture, and put the whole story in context. In TFA, it was fan gurgle about Luke being missing, with no explanation of the New Order and Resistance except to mention that they exist.

This is a movie that could seriously have been edited down to 5 minutes without losing anything. BB-8 rolling around, Rey scavenging in the star destroyer wreck and making a powderbun, Finn fleeing with BB-8, Kylo Ren throwing a tantrum and praying to Vader's helmet, Han flying them away in the Falcon, Kylo Ren killing pops, Finn fighting Ren and losing, Rey taking up the lightsaber while Ren defeats himself in his emotional turmoil. Poe was unnecessary. Leia was unnecessary. Luke was unnecessary. The force "awakening" was unnecessary. The attack on the planet-destroying weapon was unnecessary (it could simply be a secret base on the planet to be destroyed, a more insidious method reflecting the New Order's inferior resources and more terroristic organization). BB-8 could have had Luke's lightsaber and a holocron of his teachings. Supreme Debunker Snopes could have gone unmentioned. She-Yoda was SO unnecessary. Most of the dialogue was counterproductive.

Star Wars is already a mashup of a shitton of genres and movie plots. There's definitely room for a Podracing FATF. Hell, that's what I'm hoping for with all this Anthology stuff.

I mean, my dream "Established Character Free" Anthology movie is straight up "Moby Dick but with a Greater Krayt Dragon"

>better acting
Deeply questionable.

>chemistry between the actors
You mean forced weaksauce banter?

Watching the prequels, I felt like I was watching the characters in their world, even if they were odd, stiff people in a floaty cartoon world. Watching TFA, I felt like I was watching the actors on a set.

Ridley, for instance, never seemed engaged with her situation, but rather was just going through the motions to bring her to the next plot point.

Boyega just seemed like he was clowning for the camera. It was like a fish-out-of-water story of an ordinary guy teleported from Britain into stormtrooper armor in the middle of a raid. They could have had a scene where he looked in the mirror, and Scott Bakula's face was looking back.

Driver fails so hard to convey by his facial expression, tone of voice, posture, and general manner that he's conflicted that they had to write him heavy-handed lines where he says he's conflicted and specifies explicitly that he feels the light side calling him, and leave them in the final edit.

Ford and Fisher were just glad to be collecting those paycheques, and dutifully read their exposition off the teleprompter.

I don't even remember anything about Isaac, except that he said he was the best pilot and could fly anything. Then he got shot down and crashed, and had to respawn offscreen. Oh, there was that "Who talks first?" thing. I'm not sure that was in the script. It didn't seem even slightly in character. I think he might have forgotten his line and they just kept that take anyway.

For the love of God, please be lying. That KOTOR retcon movie alone sounds nightmarishly bad
>>
>>69717615
I dunno, as long as that KOTOR movie is just a prequel, I can see it slowly merging into more traditional Old Republic stories

>Obi Wan Kenobi 1-3

this will work if and only if they recast ewan. he deserves better than the prequels.
>>
>>69717958
Dudewat. Ewan was one of the good parts of the prequels and he's the right age to do Obi-Wan in the desert.
>>
>>69718028
that's exactly what i'm saying? i think he's great, he was the only good part of the prequels for me so i really want them to cast him again.
>>
>>69718028
i meant recast as in "cast him again" not recast with someone else. sorry, just realized how my wording was confusing.

Fuck off, faggot

Supposedly he was intended to be the main villain in RotJ, with the emperor/vader plotline being concluded in another trilogy. If this is true, Fett was obviously supposed to be really strong, and the impressions of fans that there was more to him than was shown in ANH and ESB were correct.

This is so awful that I believe it could be real.
