After DOFP, it's a letdown.
Like one reviewer put it, it's a whole lot of action to compensate for lack of plot or meaningful character interaction.
It does have a couple of emotionally powerful scenes, as is almost the norm for X-Men movies I guess

It was just OK, which sadly wasn't too surprising. I came out with a lot more to complain about than praise though, and I can't say I have much desire to see it again.
The problems:
Apocalypse was silly and boring. Also surprised they seemed to actually give him a concrete death. This role did nothing for Oscar Isaac.
Mystique is blue for like 10-15 mins max? And she just stands around during the final battle.
Sophie Turner's accent was AWFUL
A lot of the new characters don't have much to do. Jubilee has a few lines and never gets to use her powers, Storm just stands around until the final battle, I actually forgot Psylocke was in the movie.
The action was just messy CGI nonsense (exception being the Quicksilver rescue) and hard to much care about. Nothing to see here.
It's too long and yet still feels rushed. Singer has so much to establish that he can't really let any of the scenes breathe; it seems too busy trying to get everything together.
The characters haven't aged at all. I get that clunky makeup is terrible and all, but just making a joke about how Moira has barely aged at all doesn't successfully lampshade how ridiculous it is.
It was really weird how nobody seemed to give a shit about Magneto potentially killing a ton of people with his magnetic poles trick in the third act. Oh, he's just friends with Charles again, THE END.
What worked:
Performances were rock solid (apart from Jean)
Wolverine's cameo was dope
Quicksilver rescue scene
Apocalypse launching the nukes was intense
Post-credits scene was an interesting tease

This is a new timeline, it's still the one from First Class where events don't line up with X-Men (2000).
Believe me, I was there looking for stuff where they would set up some sort of actual continuity between this and X-Men but no, nothing of the sort.

When Wolverine woke up in the past, some realities were altered.
Plus:
- Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique has great character arc
- great introduction to the new(old) characters, like Scott, Jean, Nightcrawler and etc
- much grander scale
- some cool action sequence
- Quicksilver's slow-mo rescue sequence
- strong beginning, with fantastic opening scene
- great performances by the casts, especially McAvoy and Fassbender
- Apocalypse looks menacing
Negative:
- later half kinda fell apart
- underdeveloped characters, especially all the horsemen
- too much fan-service moments, for example that wolverine cameo has nothing to do with the plot and overlong
- JLaw looks bored playing Mystique
Overall I give it 8/10, really enjoyed it

I just came back from seeing this. Movie was generally good but it was pacing was pretty shitty and film was about 20 minutes too long.
Wolverine cameo was good, it left you wanting more but him in full raging killing machine mode is fun.
All the new cast were good and Sansa wasGreat. Apocalypse himself actually worked, which surprised me.
Couple of genuinely emotional moments too and magnetos character in particular was done justice.
Quicksilver being quick scene was good but It did feel like it was solely there to outdo Dofp scene so came across a little try hard.
Some of the jokes missed their mark too, especially from Professor X

More even compared to the future Sentinel scenes becauseboth sides were combatants, in Apocalypse we see policemen, steel mill workers, merchants, thugs all killed in gruesome ways on screen (via CGI powers but still) like they're fucking nothing, some disturbing stuff and it's not just Apocalypse who dishes the pain, Magneto goes apeshit insane in two scenes. Wolverine's sequence is brutal too but less disturbing in comparison.

It really felt like a movie in the 60's, while DOFP and Apocalypse tried to make it a point about the decades they are in, but they never really felt like they took advantage of it.

I recall reading that Apocalypse is essentially following an alternate timeline.
So we had:
FC - DofP (past only) - X:O - X1 - X2 - X3 - Sa DofP-era
And by the end of DofP it was:
FC - DofP (past only) - Happy DofP-era
But now it's:
FC - DofP (past only) - [Timeline Diverges] - Apocalypse - Deadpool - ???
It's done entirely so they can justify doing whatever they want with the characters without invalidating the happy ending in DofP because they're seperate timelines now.
