the problem with that casting choice is that it implies they're taking a little too much liberty with the story\the world of the dark tower .
adapting the dark tower into a movie they can either take the plot of one of the books and change it to fit a movie format or make a new story entirely with roland set in his world (think little sisters of eluria \ wind through the keyhole).
casting ac actor that looks nothing like the character in a story where his appearance is iconic and is repeatedly mentioned implies they are doing something else entirely and just using the name of the dark tower .

During book 2 when Roland is drawing his three, the second is Detta Walker / Odetta Holmes, the schizophrenic. In her past she dealt with lots of racial issues and this comes out in the "evil" side of her (Detta) when she tries to kill Roland and Eddie. A big chunk of that book is her screaming racial slurs and plotting their deaths because they're white. There's more to it, but that's the gist.
