Goodfellas is prep time
>>

Goodfellas crew are not even proper gangsters, they're gangster wannabes. The drug dealers in Scarface would cut them in half.
That being said, Goodfellas is a far better movie than Scarface.

You really have to be baiting now, you fedora tipping fuck. The scarface remake is by fucking far the better movie
>>
>>69645029
It is. You don't need 3 hours of increasingly less interesting episodes to do a good rise and fall arc, Scarface '32 does it in 80 minutes
>>
>>69645029
only people who didn't watch it would think this is any better than the remake.

i like my 40's noir, but this one just isn't very good.
>>
>>69645145
Agreed

It's one of the greatest gangster movies ever, and far better than anything that hack De Palma could ever hope to make
>>
>>69645327
I was mostly referring to Goodfellas, but the remake works too.

Both those movies fall into the problem of spending way too much time on their protagonists on their way up the gangster hierarchy. They make the thieving and killing and general scumbag behavior way too exciting and long, so once the downfall comes it feels almost at odds with the first half of those films. To me it's like a "have your cake and eat it too" thing, they want to revel in all their gangster power fantasies AND show how bad it is, but you can't really do both when those fantasies are so exciting to begin with
>>
>>69645527
What are you talking about?

Almost everyone dies a violent death in both Scarface and Goodfellas...

The ONLY positive thing that comes from the lifestyle is momentary wealth that either gets stolen from them or they die before they can ever really enjoy.

Tony was rich for like 2 months and in that time shot his best friend and his wife left him.
>>
>>69645527
I agree with you on the Scarface remake, but I think Goodfellas really is just a gangster fantasy.

I mean the structure of the film basically works as "I always wanted to be a gangster" which is Ray Liotta acting as audience surrogate, and then the end is him having to live a normal boring life just like the one the audience returns to when the movie is over.

I never really got a "crime doesn't pay" message from the film
>>
>>69645630
These movies exist and have enduring popularity because people like and fantasize about being gangsters, warts and all. I think Goodfellas and Scarface are excessively long and spend too much of their runtime playing up that dangerous/dramatic/tragic criminal element to the point that the "crime doesn't pay" moral that is always tacked onto these stories feels trite and an afterthought. You can't tell me Depalma and Scorsese aren't having a great time playing out these gangster stories, and clearly most of the movies' fans are as well. Scarface isn't on millions and posters and t-shirts because people think he made bad decisions
>>
>>69643574
Actually taking on Paulie, who at one point was the Underboss of the Lucchese family? Impossible, at least in that time period.

Best crew riding through.
>>
>>69645527
That's kind of the point, as far as I remember. Scorsese wanted to show the appeal of that lifestyle (which it obviously has), but also the consequences (which it almost always has).

Depends on whether or not Henry is a coke addled spaz

this

Goodfellas is a theme-park ride where the main character gets to experience the mafioso world without really having to suffer the consequences like the other characters. There is no "cake and eat it too"
>>
>>69646773
nice assumption, but he never implied that the age of the movie is something fedora related.

>I never really got a "crime doesn't pay" message from the film

You missed the part where his entire world turns to shit, the theme of "loyalty" is a massive lie, and everyone turns into a paranoid wreck doing anything they possibly can to dodge consequences for what they've done?

The first half shows you all the excitement and appeal of life in the Mafia, the second half melts away all the bullshit until you can see what these people really are.

It's not so much saying "crime doesn't pay," because crime frequently DOES pay, and the film was based on real people. It's saying "crime will pay or a while, then it will ruin your family, ruin your sanity, and surround you with 'friends' who would kill you in a heartbeat if it was in their interest to do so"
