Stray Dogs is good but don't expect something as colorful as What Time is it There, Vive l'amour, and Goodbye Dragon Inn. Feel almost the same way about WKW. I personally just can't into anything by him after In the Mood for Love.

>>69631726
Never saw that comparison but it makes total sense.
>>
>>69631781
I think In the Mood and Fallen Angels are his magnums. I loved his earlier works too. Yet to see 2046, but I will ASAP. I love how WKW is somewhat of an inspiration to Noe. And I feel like I can see WKW in Korine's Spring Breakers, another masterpiece.
>>
>>69631781
The Revenant was one of the best cinema experiences for me. The masculinity ingrained into the film certified it as an outlier in the Hollywood film industry, which is very welcome in my book. No bullshit, just men being men. I loved it.
>>
>>69631208
>The Place Beyond the Pines

My nigga.
>>
>>69632038
It was ambitious. It was beautifully shot and it explored some hefty themes. Plus Mendelsohn, Goose and Cooper were just phenomenal in it. It was criticized for the whole 3 act structure, but I thought it was a masterpiece. Yet to watch Blue Valentine, which I heard was great too.

That shot with Goose riding through the rural roads on the bike with the music playing...

I enjoyed the sci-fi part of 2046, especially android Faye Wong, but the chemistry between Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi just couldn't work for me. I still admire both of them very much. I don't know if you liked it but 2046's influence was pretty apparent in Cloud Atlas.

>>69632021
It really blows my mind that people can call a simple film like The Revenant "pretentious". Lubezki has been around forever and it seems the general audience just noticed him.

I love Tony Leung, the majority of his Hong Kong filmography is great. He's aged so well, I watched him in Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express, In the Mood, Inernal Affairs and he always brings it.

The Revenant is far from pretentious. I think it dealt with its themes in a very universal manner - it was in no way hard to read. Pretentious is a meaningless buzzword these days anyway. It doesn't mean anything more than a movie that is harder to read.

Lubetzki DP'd The Cat in the Hat fyi. He's been around for years, but I think somewhere in The New World something changed.

>I love Tony Leung, the majority of his Hong Kong filmography is great. He's aged so well, I watched him in Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express, In the Mood, Inernal Affairs and he always brings it.
I recently Happy Together and was blown away. No doubt the best actor working today. He was also great in A City of Sadness as a mute.

>Lubetzki DP'd The Cat in the Hat fyi. He's been around for years, but I think somewhere in The New World something changed.
I agree. Just from comparing his early work with Cuaron like A Little Princess to post-New World work like Children of Men. Glad he found some common ground with masters like Malick and Inarritu. It's a toss up between Benoit Debie and Lubezki for which one is my favorite contemporary DP. It's refreshing to be able to talk about The Revenant here. Most threads just end up being full of shitposting.

I thought Stray Dogs was Tsai's most beautifully shot. Really kinda the uptime expression of his slow style. Borders on being a James Benning film with how slow he takes it this time around. Like the other anon said though it isn't as 'colorful' so beware if you're expecting something as offbeat as Vive L'amour. It's sadder and more abstract

The attention Mann pays to the physicality of his characters, especially in regards to romance and especially in his digital-era films, reminds me more of WKW than any of his American contemporaries.

Hey buddy, it seems like you're projecting your own lack of enjoyment of the film onto other people and assuming that the only reason someone would like it is as a social signifier that they're more intelligent than the people who don't get it. But my friend, this isn't true. The movie elicited a stronger emotional reaction from me that almost any movie ever, and that's not something you can fake.
