Does anyone else feel D&D just don't understand why so many people die in GOT when they had source material?
Yeah there were a ton of deaths, and yes even of major characters completely out of the blue. Some deaths were unfair, in the middle of their story arc, but they weren't just for shock value. Their deaths had meaning, they caused ripples in the story and lasting effects, the death was as equally as part of their story arc and they kind of lived on in that way. Now it just seems like they're trying to cut the roster in half so they're killing just a ton of people and they're like "Look, it's an important character because they once had a speaking role! React to this, Youtubers!" without thinking about who they're actually killing.
Compare the deaths of these characters and how important of a moment and how much it changed something for a character or a bunch of them:

Not every death of a named character in GoT (not including mooks of course) carries any plot weight beyond shock value and an abrupt end to their story. And while that's certainly how it goes in real life sometimes, it gets frustrating and boring.
There's that picture that floats around of GRRM asking what Aragorn's tax policy was in LOTR. I don't give a shit what his tax policy was, unless it has bearing on the story - and it doesn't, because Aragorn *becoming* the king is his story. Yeah, his policies would factor into how good a ruler he was in real life, but that doesn't mean portraying something more true-to-life is better literature or entertainment.
