Anybody else see this? Thoughts, opinions?

I thought it was pretty uneventful, a bit emotionless, and hard to connect to the characters, but it held my interest well, and despite being a stupid story, was well told.

>mfw Bullingdon is a coward that shot back
>mfw Bullingdon thought it was a great prank to have Brian wear his shoes
>mfw he puked from fear
>>
>>69593173
I liked it a lot. Barry longed for a father figure yet was always too scared and untrusting to stick to one, and his faults lead to his downfall.
>>
it's like Kubrick's best wtf
>>
I haven't seen it, but it's my favorite Kubrick
What do I think of it, /tv/?
>>
>>69593424
Longed for a father figure? Where did you get that from?
>>
>>69595714
It's what he searched for the whole movie. He changes father figure constantly. One after the other. Someone to guide him. He becomes a soldier, a spy, a whatever. But he is too afraid to commit and he flees.
>>
>>69593173
It's a fucking masterpiece. The problem is you're a pleb.
>>
>Barry
>Emotionless
Wut?
Be more autistic.
>>
>>69597882
Yeah. He had a very stiff face. Not that he -never- showed emotion, it's just he was kind of reserved i guess. Maybe that's just how it was back then.
>>69597345
I never said I didn't like it.

>>

It was.
>>
>>69598447
It was hardly uneventful, and you've got to be autistic to think it was emotionless.
>>
>>69598447
No, it wasn't, you colossal pleb
>>
>Kiss me my boy, for we will never meet again

What did he mean by this?
>>
I'm sorry your precious Kubrick made a dull movie. Wahh, cry more.
>>
>>69593173
pseudo-intellectual core, much like all of kubrick's flicks

Every frame a painting gimmick isn't good either

Why don't you go back to shitposting in one of your several dozen GoT threads?
>>
>>69593173
Another masterpiece by the genius Kubrick, the one who mastered every single genre.
>war (3 times)
>period drama
>sci-fi (he made the only good sci-fi movie, what a man!)
>heist
>film-noir
>peplum
>romance
>erotica
>comedy
>horror (same, only good horror movie, incredible)

He was the most based director ever!
>>
>>69598737
I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

But yeah hes made some great movies. He made my favorite, a Clockwork Orange.
>>
>>69598737
In this pathetically ironic post, there's still a lot of truth. Sorry, babby :(

Barry Lyndon BTFO
>>
Without a doubt my favorite Kubrick movie, I don't see at all how you can see it as emotionless, it's probably the most emotional movie I've seen.

Kubrick's best work
>>
>>69598926
You didn't think it was a bit stiff? Eh, maybe I'm wrong.
>>
>>69593173
Barry Lyndon is the best movie ever made.
>>
>>69599021
You probably only see it as "stiff", because you've been binging capeshit and other Hollywood quip-fests for the last 15 years.

Movies before 2000 tend to be longer, and allow for some actual character development before the explosions and action scenes kick in.
>>
>>69598991
Didn't he ruin her fortune to become a Lord and have some insurance?

/r/movies was a mistake
>>
>>69599021
I thought it was an extremely thorough exploration of fatherhood, both from the point of Barry's longing and his relationship with father figures and from the point of view about how he struggles with being a father figure.

I think it's a mature movie though, what I mean by that is not that "lol dumb kids don't understand it 2deep4you" I mean it in terms of the themes of family life explored in the movie.
>>
>>69599328
roddot loves Kubrick though
>>
>>69593173
>mfw Bullingdon thought it was a great prank to have Brian wear his shoes
it was a good idea, he trolled barry in front of the aristocracy and made him embarrass himself

>a bit emotionless
>mfw he puked from fear
he thought he was about to be killed by someone who had cheated on and manipulated his mother, bullied him for most of his teen years and blew his family fortune
>>
>>69599177
Well, there you go.

Perhaps now, after watching something that's actually good, which leaves you with something to consider after finishing it, you will realize just how much of a waste of time watching capeshit actually is.

I've personally not watched any capeshit since Iron Man, as I literal felt like a sniveling retard being spoonfed quips and explosions in order to keep me interested.
>>
>>69599411
Everybody loves Kubrick
>>
>>69599427
been years since i've watched the film, but is there any depictions of him bullying his step-son? cheating is a different thing. who the hell doesn't? plus aristocratic sexual proclivities were a bit different than they are today, and having a mistress back then was a given.
>>
>>69599427
>he thought he was about to be killed by someone who had cheated on and manipulated his mother, bullied him for most of his teen years and blew his family fortune

i know this all to be true but i cant help but root for barry
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmSDnPvslnA

pretty interesting video about the lenses used in the film
>>
>>69599907
Yeah, I recognized Barry was a dick, but couldn't help but root for him. He went through a lot over the years, so I guess I could easily forgive his dickishness, whereas bullingdon was a spoiled child who never faced any real hardships.

People give shit to Barry for marrying up, but women do this all the time, and it's perfectly acceptable. Where's the equality in that?
>>
>>69599427
I think bullingdon saying heinous things and making his mother cry was what set him off, not the shoes.

Also, why all the butthurt over Barry wrecking bullingdons shit? Fucker deserved it.
>>
>>69599103

Yes, but in the process of obtaining Lordship he had to court many high-life bourgeois which bankrupted them

beautiful film with a somewhat weak ending.
>>
>>69593173

>emotionless

That scene when he tells the story to his dying son was the most emotional thing I've ever seen in a film.

You stupid cunt.
>>
>>69600413
I cant blame him for marrying up - I feel like one of his main reasons for doing so was to secure a royal patronage for his offspring and to bring his mother over whom he had abandoned for years - by marrying he could solve all his problems in one more; find love, do right by his mother, and secure his lineage.

fuck bullingdon

Honestly, I thought the whole emotional distance to the characters was intended because it was a story of a sociopath. The world (after the first act) was cold as shit.

Also, I watch this every year. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Absolutely loved the movie. The visuals were fucking gorgeous (costumes, set design, and photography all came together amazingly) and it worked well as an extremely dry tragicomedy.

>>

together with 2001 the only 10/10 film by Kubrick
>>
>>69607948
agree. But making 2 masterpieces in your career is pretty impressive
>>
>>69598574
this movie is extremelly unpretentious though
>>
>>69608400
It is, but all his other films are sub-par. Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove are alright.
>>
>>69598574
>pseudo-intellectual

It doesn't even purport to be intellectual, so it can't be pseudo-intellectual.

Generalizing too much is the mistake you make. You should've given Barry Lyndon a better look.
>>
>he needs to connect/like characters
>>
What Kubrick movie should I watch next? I've seen (in order of preference) :
Barry Lyndon
2001
A clockwork orange
Dr Strangelove
The shining
Fullmetal jacket
>>
>>69608927
Cant think of any Kubrick movie that is under 7/10. Some of them might be overrated, but it is still an overall solid filmography
>>
>>69609178
Fear and Desire
>>
>>69609178
Spartacus
if you want something similar to Barry Lyndon

Lolita
if you want something similar to Strangelove
>>
>>69609239
I thought Lolita was 6/10. But all others were at least 8/10 to me.
>>
>>69609178
That's my order as well. Watch Eyes Wide Shut next. Cruise's acting is kind of weak, but everything else is fantastic. The visuals are gorgeous, the camerawork is brillant, and the tension is constant, so you won't even blink while watching it.
>>
>>69609495
Oops sorry I already watched it but I forgot to put it in my list, probably because I really didn't like it lol.
Honestly I usually agree with /tv/'s opinion in general but I can't understand what's the hype about this movie

And I agree. But you'll find many directors who make better films on average, like Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Bergman, Fellini, ...
