WB observes Disney's cape profits and wants in. Now, never mind that Disney has been building the MCU since 2008, earlier if you count Iron Man production and pre-production, Disney is WB's competition and WB does not want to be left behind. So WB takes its two most popular properties, Sups and Batman, and puts them into a movie together and tells their film maker to not only make a blockbuster, but make a movie that can lead into a multi-movie multi-cape franchise.
So Snyder, who can make a beautiful film but who has neither the clout nor the balls to stand up to the studio sets about to do just that.
That's the problem, this film was treated like a vehicle and not a film. There are obvious attempts at theme and depth here, some really neat parallels drawn to other properties and archetypical myths, but all of that takes a back seat to the studios drum beat: make a block buster, set up the franchise.
This could have been a good film. It really could have, but now it's just visually interesting spectacle with a mess of half formed themes and ideas that serves as fanboy war bait.
These characters deserve better, and Snyder should not be helming films anymore. Let him craft the visuals of stories, he's got a look and that looks is great when its done right, but he has no grasp of narrative.

Speaking of childish, Lex's motivation was ridiculous. Superman was the only one that was fighting for something important. Batman was just being a dick. Lois served no point other than to act as someone for Superman to save, and to trace the TOP SECRET LEX LUTHOR ONLY! bullets back to-- wait for it-- Lex Luthor.
Doomsday shouldn't have been in the movie at all. Superman shouldn't have died. The movie should've led up to Batman and Superman fighting each other only to find out they were manipulated by Lex Luthor, saving Martha Kent, and apprehending Lex. Wow! I just shaved off 30 minutes from the runtime, gave the fans what they wanted with the titular fight AND joining of forces, a happy ending where justice prevails, and Lex actually developing a real reason to hate Superman.
Snyder spent so much effort on Jesus imagery he forgot that there should be a plot that made sense

movie is like a supercut of promos for other movies and setpieces with no structure or actual story to back it up. also rushes a shared universe in a single movie with no build up or reason to care about characters or motivations and the representations of the characters in this universe do not match preconceived notions of how they should act (aka not murder everyone they come across) and lack of build up to how they came to this type of behaviour further hurts our connection to the characters and robs their actions of any emotion.

Snyder gave the audiences something they weren't expecting, and he also tried to put too much stuff in that relies on being expanded upon in the next films, making most plot points look redundant. It truly is the dawn of justice, but Marvel has dumbed down the expectancy of depth in a cape film, so it just flew over most people's heads.
People paying too much attention to scores and critics hurt it as well. Mostly everyone I've talked to that likes it doesnt pay mind to scores or reviews, and those that dislike it just fling around the famous 27% while regurgitating complaints from written reviews.
