Comic books are over a hundred years old at this point. You're talking about generations of people who have grown up with these stories from their childhood, then you have the movies which started up in the 80's actually being decent and so you had a generation that grew up with this films.
Just because you get older doesn't mean that some of that nostalgia and appreciate for a genre goes away. Well unless you're an embittered old cunt.
Since the Nolan movies, I remember my dad enjoying Begins, which I found weird because he never liked superhero movies before.
