This started pre-Disney. What happened was, when they were casting Ironman, originally, THIS GUY was the biggest name on the ticket. His contract reflected that. RDJ got paid less than him for the first movie.
When it came time for the second movie, they wanted to pay him less than RDJ, and he got bent out of shape over it. I mean, I can see his point, but still. He wanted the original proportionality maintained for his appearances in subsequent movies.

Not that he did a bad job, but he was obviously not the one people came out of the theater talking about and next to one cared when he was replaced. There wasn't a contract stating he would get paid x amount of dollars for being in the sequel. He simply figured he would be paid as much as he was for the first compared to the other actors + get a raise equal to RDJ's, but got buttmad when this wasn't the case.

from what I read, Howard was the reason RDJ got the Iron man job. They were friends, RDJ had a terrible reputation because of his drug problem. Ironman then was as a B level character (at the time) and wasnt expected to hit high numbers that it did. When It became a hit they lowballed howard since they wanted to run with RDJ.
Howard thought that out of loyalty RDJ would stand with him , not resigning until everyone got a fair paycheck

Jenkins was slowing down production, they greenlit Thor 2 too fast. They dropped her and got Alan Taylor, who was mostly a tool. Feige, Wheddon, the actors, they all were pitching in to make Thor 2. It's actually cause Feige was so busy with Thor 2's production he wasnt able to dick around with cap 2's development.
Thor 2 is such a mess of a production, Im surprised the movie is watchable. Thor 3 they gave themselves lots more time to work on it.

I thought everyone knew that RDJ went with a low salary for Iron Man, but magically negotiated some kind of cut for the post-release profits - the producers, thinking a super hero movie, AND and Iron Man movie wasn't going to make a ton of money - That;s why Howard was top billed in casting.
When IM1 took off, RDJ made more money than ever thought possible from his contract deal. The producers obviously wanted a second one - but were never going to let him have the same sweet cut from profits - so naturally they had to give him a high salary.
Howard always thought he was the magical actor whose skill and name drew the crowds, saw how RDJ actually made out with more money than he did, wanted more for a sequel than he had initially negotiated.
