Is this the greatest alien kino?

Why didnt he infect a bird and fly to civilization?
>>
There were no birds bro lol.
Birds need trees and plants to eat, not snow.
Awesome effects in this movie. The prequel they made was such fucking shit.

I could watch only this movie for the rest of my life.

It's the greatest kino, period.

I can't work out how this movie is just so fucking perfect.

Might have something to do with having no women in it at all.

What is this kino shit? I've been away for a couple of months and missed out on the latest buzzword craze.
>>
>>69243670
It's ambiguous what the alien wants. We see it's constructed a ship, presumably to escape Earth. Maybe it didn't want to infect everything and only go home and was only infecting the humans so it could survive.
>>
>>69244876
>Guy 1: "Why don't these guys just fly off in the helicopter?"
>Guy 2: "Because there's no helicopters, dumbass."

That's how useful penguins are to this conversation.

>>69245531
When Blair smashed all the computer equipment it's possible he was already a Thing. He couldve gotten infected during the autopsy of the infected dog, you can see him touch the body with his pencil and later he has the pencil touch his lips.

He never touches the remains of the dog with the pencil.

>>
Is the alien in The Thing the best representation of extra terrestrial life ever portrayed in film?
>>
>>69252633
There is a right answer: he isn't a Thing -- at least, based on what's presented by the insipid and hilariously-wrong hypothesis such as:

Which you can.

>I-it was gasoline!

Speculation.

>>
>>69252703
I've seen a documentary few years ago. It's speculated that it's the closest portrayal there is if we would ever encounter an extraterrestrial life form.
>>

He's an alien yet he knows how to react to heated copper wire. So yeah, he might not be able to detect petrol, but it would still have a reaction to it burning its cells.
>>
>>69252596
In the prequel a human got infected and became the thing and then the dog. Then the dog became the thing and as Diabeetus said, it was already starting to transform back into the dog
>>

>>69244364
The thing never encountered birds to assimilate.

It only encountered the norwegians, their dog, then the americans.
>>

You can pack a lot of extra meat into the form of a dog; it would be heavy, but you could still turn into a man if you were disguised as a full-grown dog.

Its not just penguins in Antarctic
There are birds that fly on the continent so the theory still stands.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Antarctica

For all we know the organism was already on its way. The burnt "corpse" of the splitfaced thing was left out in the open. Scavenger birds could have interacted with the corpse in that time and been assimilated as a result.

And if a single one of them made it to the ocean then it would be even easier for the thing to begin its assimilation of all life on earth.

The real question would be what happens when the thing reaches substantial plant life?
Could it absorb a jungle and turn the planet itself into living nightmare where even grass wants to kill you?
>>
>>69256105
I love how flimsy the dynamite looks in this scene.
>>
>>69256507
there was no life around the research station. It's an entire continent. There's some life in that continent, doesn't mean it's in walking distance of the station. That particular area in Antarctica is pretty much the only place on Earth where this movie can work, otherwise the Thing would just take over all life, grass included.

So why was MacReady's gear out in the snow? Did the Thing plant it there to frame him, realizing he was the biggest threat? To the best of my knowledge, they never address this. Maybe it can't change its mass drastically?
So be would never be able to shrink down to bird size and at the same time be able to fly while weighting so much.

Maybe it was just really a very primitive species, it is never confirmed if he is the pilot of the ship or not,

Maybe its prime directive is to consume eveything in its path like the blob and not deviate from this procedure.

You can see the shape once they arrive to the Norwegan base and find the ice cube thing that had it contained.

Also on the New one you can see it frozen in the ice before they cut the ice cube.

And by the looks of it, it looks rather big and heavy, assuming it can reshape to smaller stuff than his size somehow, it would be really hard to explain even on science fiction how it could also reduce its mass.

desu though those 2 recent lost themes albums are both great so i am completely cool with this
>>
>>69257463
What documentary did you watch? I'm referring to the one where they go through the entire movie making process.
>>
>>69257408

How can you be certain it was it's true form in the ice cube?

Are we actually including the new one in discussion?

It's definitely not some individual organism like you make out, what about the blood test and there being multiple things at once borne from one infected body?
>>
>>69257408
Even that might not be it's original form, it could be the original owner of the spaceship
>>
>>69251586

Ihaven't seen the movie but how bad is it compared to those fantastic props in the first video?
>>
>>69253499
Well, there's pretty much no scenario in which being able to assimilate and transform into other species would be evolutionarily disadvantageous. So it could have literally any original form but it mostly likely started as a very simple organism.

It also stands to reason that, do to what a perfect adaptation it is, any planet where the thing evolved would become totally dominated by it. And, given enough time, such a mutation would eventually occur and prosper in every ecosystem. So it's not inconceivable that humanity will actually be destroyed by a thing like species in the future, but we'll probably die of something else first.
>>
>>69257573
It is a bit dated but honestly I think it still holds up and on the first watch is legitimately shocking
>>
>>69257327
he doesn't even really like talking about his movies that much it seems
>>
>>69257573

It's not terrible.

The director and crew were very passionate about making it a good prequel and it shows, they really went to great lengths to show proper respect to the 82 film.

The producers covered up the practical effects to get more crowds with the Video Game look despite everyone hating it. That's the real tragedy of the film itself.

its actually not the worst cgi ever.

But the film itself is just a bland as fuck monster flick really.

Everybody goes on about the practical shit being cut like it ruined the movie but in reality no amount of practical effect wizardry could have saved it.

It was insipid, pointless and ultimately didn't have any interesting ideas of how to utilize the thing as an antagonist.
The was nothing as creepy as the Bennings scream, as disgusting as the defib moment or tense as the bloodtest sequence.

Its just the thing bursting out of a person chasing the characters around a bit before being burnt.
Rinse repeat til the credits roll.
>>
>>69257519
OH, then i retract my 'liar!' accusation, anon - with apologies! I saw - John Carpenbter's The Thing: Terror Takes Shape. A comfy doc of a comfy film, in my opinion.
>>
>>69258109
>It was insipid, pointless and ultimately didn't have any interesting ideas of how to utilize the thing as an antagonist.

Incorrect. It grew the universe by explaining the Thing's relationship to metal and the teeth-fillings scene was more than a decent replacement for the blood testing scene.

Furthermore, they actively showed The Thing learning from the mistakes it made in this camp. It was more hostile and active; in the second film, the contrast with how subtle it is highlighted even more.
>>
>>69245121
it's an additional facet of the film/movie/flick meme, being like the upper echelon of what would previously be classified as film
>>
>>69249051
Penguins have this neat special ability called they can fucking swim it's common knowledge you goddamn retard
>>
>>69258191
Having a character acknowledge that the thing cannot absorb metal or fillings is not an adequate replacement for a meticulously crafted and tense sequence that keeps you on the edge of you seat even when you've seen the scene a thousand times.

If anything the prequel ruins much of the threat of the thing because it decided to reveal itself at times that make absolutely fuck all sense.

Like when it decides that instead of sitting in that helicopter and being flown to safety it should instead explode into gore and crash its only means of escape for no good reason.

Well there was a good reason, "OOH SCARY MONSTER!!!" which is all the prequel amounts too.
>>
So how does it feel to be consumed?

Do you die instantly or are you still 'alive' inside the Thing?

Can you communicate with other consumed victims?
>>
>>69258398
>and being flown to safety

The helicopter was being flagged down.

I mean, at least watch the movie, man. Come on.
>>
>>69258430
You're probably dead since it's not your DNA anymore, i doubt your brain still functions anymore
>>
>>69258430

I think it probably feels like "fading" away, your consciousness slowly getting dimmer and dimmer and a spreading feeling of numbness.

Basically how dying probably feels except you're getting a warm wet hug at the same time
>>
>>69258447
Sorry I haven't performed sufficient mental gymnastics to convince myself to rewatch this garbage multiple times.

And it still makes absolutely no sense no matter what was happening to the helicopter. Had it landed and he not exploded do you think the helicopter would have stayed there literally forever?
>>
>>69258501

>Raped by tentacles
>a warm wet hug
>>
>>69258501
>>69258480
So what exactly kills you?
Assuming he consumed you alive?
Intoxication from different bloods?
Organ failure?
>>

Every cell of your body being replaced
>>
>>69258398
>If anything the prequel ruins much of the threat of the thing because it decided to reveal itself at times that make absolutely fuck all sense.

It's like you missed the point about it "learning from mistakes" so that it didn't do that in the 82 film.

Yes organ failure, just like this guy, the only difference is that instead of being destroyed, your DNA is consumed by teh thing
>>
>>69258550

>Had it landed and he not exploded do you think the helicopter would have stayed there literally forever?

Considering that's exactly what happens when the crew decide to quarantine the base, YES, that is exactly what would have happened to the helicopter.

I swear, children who don't actually watch movies these days and judge them, that's all /tv/ is now.
>>
>>69258614
you mean your shit excuse for the prequels lack of constancy to the first film.

/tv/ is no so contrarian autists think the pequel to the thing was good
>>
>>69258550
Not him but anon, the reason it was flagged down was because the dude knew the Thing might be aboard, if the Thing just did nothing and played it cool they would have caught it and maybe even killed it since they still had a lot of armed people down there.

Plus its not like the helicopter can just fly on its own to fucking Los Angeles or Chile and start fucking shit up.
>>
>>69258704
>prequels lack of constancy to the first film.

It had absolute constancy when compared to the first film. The writers, setmakers, director and actors were all completely committed to delivering a prequel and they succeeded.
>>
>>69246851

You were not brought upon this world to 'get it'.
>>
>>69258661

>>
>>69252703
This makes me think - how was The Thing even created as a species?
>>
>>69258782
I think acute radiation poisoning
>>
>>69258782
Exposed to extreme degrees of radiation, his DNA shattered on the spot, since all his cells stopped working he started melting like a fruit you leave in sunlight

Check out Tokaimura nuclear incident
>>
>>69258810

Nobody knows, but that's obvious.

Maybe it's natural, maybe it's a weapon. Maybe it's consumed the entire galaxy beyond Earth and our solar system is the only one in the entire galaxy that hasn't been taken over yet, and all that is awaiting our species in the cold, dark void is a shapeless, nameless, terrifying death and assimilation into an alien entity.
>>
>>69258810

I, however, do like the prequel. I know that this is a minority opinion so you wouldn't be making an interesting observation if you were to point that out.

Some loose ends I've considered.

My personal take on things:

Norris is infected first. Palmer is infected later, off-screen. It's Palmer's mystery undies that Macready talks about on the tape.

The mass of shit that they burned has enough heat and biomass that it pulls together, AGAIN, and goes for Blair while no one is looking. This heap of shit is where the bulk of the biomass for Final-Form Blair Thing comes from, at the end.

Blair-Thing is the mystery figure who blows past Fuchs. It (Blair-Thing) was simply looking for parts to try and complete the saucer, but since it knows that other Things are safely ensconced inside, it doesn't bother about Fuchs, and simply burns him, trying to finish his improvised saucer before the rest of the team circles back to him (it knows it's only got a day or three tops before things start going to shit on the inside, given past performances).

>>
>>69259462

Simply read my above post >>69259036 line-by-line (whichever movies you care to look at), to account for which bodies, carcasses, things etc are which. You can see by the arrows which bodies give rise to which things, and eventually carcasses.

But the thing about the Thing is, if you don't get every.last.cell, it's coming back. This is why the movie is about as depressing as the Blob. Even the carcass they hauled back from the Norwegian base rejuvenated, eventually, despite being quite charred.

Each film has its central "Money-shot", which precipitates the third act: the Norris-Thing in Carpenter, and the Edvard-Adam thing functions the same way (in terms of plot/story-pacing) in the 2011 flick. There's about as much-thing-tissue spread around the continent as there are victims, so about two dozen human bodies and half a dozen dogs' worth. And all it takes is for a single cell to freeze for the threat to persist...

This "freezing" as never really /killing/, but simply /neutralizing/, is also used in The Blob (another 50s flick that got a more interesting 80s remake 30 years later). And of course, it's also used famously in T2. I should check TVTropes for "freezing the enemy" or similar.

Hey guys, hey guys hey. The Thing Versus The Blob..?

It's such a stupid scene. If they wanted to show that Mac was a sore loser, they could have had the crew playing poker or something, and have him have a good hand then lose and throw a fit. Could also learn something about a few of the other guys too. Instead they do a shit scene about pouring whiskey into a computer, something no one ever does. Yes, angry people do dumb shit, but this literally never happens in other movies or irl outside of this silly horror flick. It's so bad it taints the movie.

If you knew someone who poured whiskey into the front of a computer, you'd probably do 2 things:

1) ask him where the fuck he got a computer case that has a giant door in the front that gives access to the guts of the machine

and 2) youd think this person was unstable and insane and youd make a mental note not to trust this stupid motherfucker
