I don't consider myself an anime fan, and looking back there's not a single anime series I've watched that I consider essential viewing, but I've recently been watching some anime films and I do
it's a complete different medium and way to make films, is it fair that all of it be disregarded?

I enjoy a lot of medium's cliches and the pozi vibes of most of the shows work for me but it's perfectly fine if a person doesn't like it.
Objectively speaking if we asssume that purpose of art is the persuit of truth then the vast majority of anime shows fail at that, but there is about the same quantity of really great anime as there are tv shows.
With anime movies I would say the percent of great ones is higher than regular movies but it's simply because there are much more regular movies.
All-in-all it's a legit medium that has a barrier of entry thanks to some of it's quirks. As with anything you shouldn't force yourself to like it but, on the other hand, if you do like it allow yourself to enjoy it.

I don't watch anime regularly, but yeah, there are great films to be seen in the format, but they are rare. I guess it is ultimately up to the audience and if they can lose themselves in something clearly foreign to them that dictates how it is perceived compared to live-action and CGI. Those already into Japanese media do not care, but worldwide anime carries a stigma of sorts. To me, a film is a film, and it is no secret that a cartoon can move people in ways a normal film can, and in ways it cannot.
