The reason why it's there is in the Man-Bat scene is to show that Bruce has become so infatuated with killing Superman he's tainted the memory of his own mother with his lust for revenge. In short his reason for defeating criminals this entire time was his mother, but this time against Superman, it's the Bat itself. That's why there's this painting there in blue and red like Superman, and that's why the Bat shoots out of his mom's grave.

Of course we're supposed to find these things. Zod is represented as Satan being vanquished by St. Michael.

However it's clear from the image in Bruce's dream that there is no Zod in his mind. From Bruce's perspective all that pain and suffering was Clark's fault.

Saint Michael the Archangel isn't a saint, but rather he is an angel, and the leader of all angels and of the army of God. This is what the title "Archangel" means, that he is above all the others in rank.

St. Michael has four main responsibilities or offices, as we know from scripture and Christian tradition.

The first is to combat Satan.
The second is to escort the faithful to heaven at their hour of death.
The third is to be a champion of all Christians, and the Church itself.
And the fourth is to call men from life on Earth to their heavenly judgment.
Very little is known about St Michael other than what we know from scriptures, which themselves are sparse.

In Daniel, St. Michael is mentioned twice. The first time as one who helped Daniel, and the second time he is mentioned with regard to the end times of the world when he will stand for the "children of thy people."

His next mention comes in the Epistle of St. Jude, where St. Michael is said to guard the tombs of Moses and Eve and has contended with Satan over the body of Moses.

The final mention is in Revelation, where St. Michael and his angels, do battle with the dragon.

There are other scriptures where St. Michael is implied, but not mentioned by name, such as the angel; who defends the gate to Paradise, who defends against Balaam, and "who routed the army of Sennacherib."

Today, St. Michel is invoked for protection, especially from lethal enemies. He is also the patron of soldiers, police and doctors.

Doomsday's birth is very reminiscent to both of these scenes.
Same as Doomsday, the Frankenstein monster was born from corpses.
Same as the Uruk-hai, who were orc-men crossbreeds, Doomsday is a Kryptonian-Earthling crossbreed, he resembles a LotR troll on purpose too.

Because copying renaissance paintings isn't impressive. People have been knocking off Renaissance paintings since the Renaissance. And the obvious references are particularly not impressive when they're surrounded by 2 hours of boring, belligerently stupid dogshit.

It's a bunch of 80-year-old comic characters contradictorily "reinterpreted" through the lens of a 70-year-old objectivist ideology, awkwardly posing to recreate 500-year-old religious imagery of 2000-year-old religious lore. It's a fucking joke. It's what a stupid person thinks is smart.

The references are not incidental to an unrelated plot, and you know that.

They all tie in to a much larger story structure of mankind coming to terms with Gods (metahumans) among them.

The "structure" is dogshit.

And there's more God imagery out there than fucking Catholic renaissance art. It's a story about "mankind coming to terms with God," not Gods. It's the second movie with exclusively monotheistic imagery, in spite of the fact that the movie is literally about the introduction of a whole gaggle of Gods. Now there's water jesus, lady jesus, robot jesus, and time and space jesus. Plenty of intriguing polytheism imagery out there if the idea is actually about "Mankind coming to term with Gods (metahumans) among them." It's not allusion, it's fucking reference. And it doesn't "tie in" at all. You can kill the entire fucking Day-of-Dead.jpg hero jesus montage and you lose nothing in the narrative.

> I'd be interested to see the results.
I've taken 4 IQ tests administered by diagnostic professionals in a clinical setting. Gotten a few different results. One time I was tired and annoyed. One time I studied. My "high score" was 40 points higher than my "low score." It's a measure of the ability to take a test. Not a measure of actual intelligence.

i don't think so, and the movie has had me thinking since i saw it

i'm sure that snyder thinks something along the lines of what i'm going to say, especially given the joseph campbell connection and how he talks about myth
i think everything snyder does is already *there* he just makes it visual and explicit
i've even wondered if jesus and moses are just capeshit from their times and this is actually something primal within us as a species that as of yet hasn't gone away
that is to say, i wonder if those comics have been written by "hidden hand" that comes from the unconscious and bvs takes an overt angle to play with internal aspects of certain characters while the movie itself plays with internal concepts we currently have in relation to the subjects touched on in the movie

>But to stay on topic, you really think an avengers movie is better than bvs?
Think you were talking to someone else, but absolutely yes. BvS, as a movie, is a fucking disaster. Snyder didn't really understand how Chekov's Gun works so he stupidly moved Lex getting access to the ship and Zod's body to his second scene. Making essentially everything that happens in the second act completely pointless from a narrative perspective.

The batmanslaughter convoy attack sequence has no narrative reason to exist.

The Flash tease completely ruined the point of the Knightmare in the plot of the movie. Instead of an ambiguous mystery about who the "her" was that Batman "took away from Superman," we get Mexicali Flash screaming at the audience about Lois, because Zack doesn't understand what Kuleshov was talking about.

> with at least kind of an interesting plot
There's a drastically altered 90 minute version of the movie with "an interesting plot." Mason Jars full of piss and blowing up congress for no benefit aren't "interesting," they're "baffling."
>and some cool dream sequence things
Man-Bat dream is redundant, forced, and a momentum suck.
Pa Kent dream primarily addresses the first movie, appears in the third act of the second, is like a parody of someone doing grimdark.
>batman who is actually driven by fear rather than heroism.
Actively sabotaged by the imagery and poem suggesting that the bats "take him to the light." Much of his stated reason to want to kill Supes is driven by narcissism. He wants to secure his legacy on a suicide by God mission.
>I don't think avengers has anything like that to offer.
I don't spend $15 to go watch a superhero movie for the biblical references and vague, contradictory dream sequences.

>Piss Christis a 1987 photograph by the AmericanartistandphotographerAndres Serrano. It depicts a small plasticcrucifixsubmerged in a glass of the artist'surine.
Lex Luthor's sabotage of Superman's will to serve humanity was highlighted by his seemingly ultra-petty humiliation of Senator Finch. Yet the two unrelated schemes have this artful connection.

>SisterWendy Beckett, an art critic andCatholic nun, stated in a television interview withBill Moyersthat she regarded the work as not blasphemous but a statement on "what we have done to Christ": that is, the way contemporary societyhas come to regardChristand the values he represents.
The entire idea behind the Congressional Hearing was Piss Christ. Hell, the idea of the movie is Piss Christ. Snyder is completely aware of all the themes at work here, including that of a "realistic" take on Superman being detrimental to the character. Placing Superman in a real world setting -- that of cynics, corruption, and apathy -- is the same as placing Jesus in a jar of piss that is our contemporary society. This doubles down on the prediction that Superman's miracle of resurrection will usher in a new era for this world free from the cyncisim and 'realism' where Superman can live up to his potential.

>Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne,George Pell, sought an injunction from theSupreme Court of Victoriato restrain the National Gallery of Victoria from publicly displayingPiss Christ, which was not granted. Some days later, one patron attempted to remove the work from the gallery wall, and two teenagers later attacked it with a hammer.

Snyder was even genius enough to predict the movie's hatred, from prominent critics and especially from passionate youths desperate for the pure symbol promised to them in their sunday schools and bedtime stories (comics and cartoons).

Justice League, as the final part of the Superman trilogy, will reveal all.

In other words, whether it's transformers 1,2,3 etc, or avengers 1,2,3,etc, just one of those movies can occupy a slot in my memory and basically represent all of them. To me bvs happens to be unique enough that I feel like it deserves its own slot in my memory.

The wetness of the child takes the dreamer to bed-wetting. He remembers that he used to wet his bed when he was little, a habit which he kept up for some time. Bed-wetting is certainly an infantile mode of behaviour. - The question of urine comes in here, and the genetic significance of urinary symbols. The connection between urethral erotism and power is recognized. Power psychology is in
some way often connected with urinary symbolism in the unconscious. We have to consider the significance of urination symbolically. I can find no reason why the act of urination in the dream, or the sexual
act itself, should always be arbitrarily taken as a finality. The urinary stream passes out into the world of objects. Urination thus
can become a symbol of the libido passing outwards into reality. I might speak of a ' urinary' relationship to the object, a urinary
relationship to the object being characteristic of a peculiar, urgent, non-humorous, power-ambition psychology, in my experience. The
patient in question had a pronounced power-relationship, of an infantile character, to the object; and therefore, correspondingly, an
enormous resistance to the subjective relationship to the unconscious.

>our position is strange to me, since BvS simultaneously has carefully chosen and consistent imagery that references a specific section of culture and contrasts it with modern pop mythology but is apparently stupid dogshit.
Because it wasn't really "carefully chosen," and was only consistent in that it was made by a catholic-imagery-obsessed Christian Scientist WASP. Listen to his interviews. He chooses his imagery largely based around what looks neat.

And "contrasting" fucking renaissance catholic imagery with comic book mythology isn't innovative or impressive. They're our culture's legends. Literally every fucking comic book movie understands and conveys that. Constantly putting characters literally standing in front of metaphorical renaissance paintings and constantly making them awkwardly recreating them is like the textbook definition of "obvious." Superman was always Jesus, you don't need to literally make him that. You don't need to have a majority of the dialogue be about MUH GODS. It's forced, it's brash, it's fucking stupid, and endlessly redundant. If he put half as much effort into making the narrative as clear as the "subtext," the movie wouldn't be consistently called "incoherent." Nobody doesn't understand Lex's beef with God, because he literally says it. What they don't understand is why he knew any of the shit that he knew, or what his plan was in the first 2 acts, because they never show it.
>>
>>69235459

The symbolisms of in front or behind are not really always sexual in meaning. They may deal with the relationship to the world of objects and the relationship to the world of the unconscious. In a sense the unconscious lies behind us, the world of objects lies in front of us. The symbols of urination and defaecation are sometimes used in these and many other applications. In connection with urination and power we have to remember that the child has often many fantasies with regard to the urinary stream, about its direction, about the height
it can go and the area it can cover. These become associated with the idea of the putting out of one's own personality into life as an
expression of power over the object. The custom of certain primitive tribes in handing on the power to a new-coming medicine man must
be mentioned here. The retiring Shamam passes urine over the newcomer, thereby handing on his power. The frequency of micturition that often comes when people are in a very ambitious, excited, and restless state of mind must also be considered. I will take the
reference in the dream to the infantile personality being dirty and wet with urine as being connected with the theme of the infantile power relationship to the object, developed later to a 'blood' relationship.

Something I'd like to take a moment to point out.

There are plenty of instances of religious iconography in this film that aren't directly tied to Christianity. The thunderclouds and lightning could be taken as allusions to other gods like Zeus and Thor, but more generally, Superman is being presented as a savior deity on some occasions and as a solar deity on others, but since the early Christian church appropriated much of the imagery typically associated with Apollo, it still comes off looking vaguely Christian to western society,

Pic related.

>You apparently don't understand Chekov's gun principle otherwise you would not have made this stupid post.
Chekov's gun is that you establish that there is a gun in the first act. Not that you give the antagonist the gun, and the bullets, in their second scene, and then have the second act focus on the antogonist's attempts at getting a knife.

Great example of Chekov's gun in 10 Cloverfield Lane: She packs the expensive bottle of scotch in her first scene. in the second act Howard mentions that he had grabbed the scotch but forgot it in his truck. In the third act she rediscovers the Scotch in the truck and uses it as a bomb. She's not holding onto a lit Molotov cocktail the entire fucking movie.

>Why are you talking about Kuleshov?
If you follow one ambiguous shot or sequence with an explicit shot or sequence, the audience forms a logical understanding of the intention. Language of cinema etc. The Knightmare was written as ambiguous, the ambiguous "her" as written in the dream is supposed to inform the MARTHA plot pivot. But it completely fails because the ambiguous sequence was immediately followed by Flash yelling about goddamn Lois, in an unwritten scene that Zack thought would be neat and threw in at the last minute to tease a future movie. He ruined the narrative of the movie trying to tease the next one. Fucking Kuleshov.

>Basically because the plan seems to have no rhyme or reason at a glance.

So you're going to make me copypasta this AGAIN. Okay, here goes...

The fucking thing the autists can't grasp (being autists) is that Luthor's approach changed SEVERAL times during the movie, as circumstances changed:

1. Work with Holly Hunter's Senator Finch to criminalize and control metahumans (a la Watchmen, The Incredibles). Collect data on Metas. Create incidents embarrassing Superman (like the African crisis, which spiraled out of control after Supes left).
BUT THEN...

2. Big Kryptonite chunk found. Hire thugs to bring chunk into country, at same time, court Finch to legally authorize this importation, which would grant him tacit Federal approval of his anti-metahuman schemes
BUT THEN...

3. Finch tells him to fuck off. At same time, he does obtain access to Zod's body and the Krypton scoutship. Continue illegal scheme to import Kryptonite, start working on a way to trick his way into the scoutship with Zod's fingerprints.
BUT THEN...

4. Batman swipes his Kryptonite. Accesses scoutship, starts researching Krypton, decides to create Doomsday. Blow up US Congress, killing Finch (Luthor fucking HATES being thwarted) and further humiliating Supes. Kidnaps Martha Kent, blackmails Supes into fighting Bats (who he knows has a Kryptonite advantage) while Doomsday preps. No matter who wins, Doomsday kills the victor.
BUT THEN...

5. Last minute change of heart* spares Supes, who teams with Bats and WW to defeat Doomsday at the cost of Supes life. Now in deep shit, Luthor (deleted scene, but presumably canon) contacts Darkseid before his capture. Taunts Bats from prison cell that DS is coming.

*DC continuity is within a metaverse, so in some timelines, Bats kills Supes. Not this one. Happy?

I don't think BvS was terribly well executed, but one of the biggest complaints that I won't issue a verdict on until we get Justice League is how dark and shitty everything is.

I'm with you in thinking/hoping that Superman's resurrection is going to be a turning point not only plotwise but tonally for the movies.

In my opinion it is absolutely vital that when he comes back that things change significantly, and if they do I think it will have been well earned and retroactively make the dour tone of MoS and BvS fine.

If it doesn't though it will prove every one of Snyder's critics completely right.

>At that moment, I thought, “I’m not done with this yet. I want to go back and keep telling the story.” “Batman v Superman” is a bit of an “Empire Strikes Back” or “Two Towers” or any similar middle film in a trilogy. The middle film tends to be the darkest one. I do think from “Man of Steel” through “Justice League,” it is one saga really.

>I expect “Justice League” will be tonally not quite as dark as “Batman v Superman.” From that point of view, I felt compelled to go back and try to lift us and myself into a different tonal place because I think when you write a darker film, sometimes you want to redeem it all a bit.

That's the plan, anon.

Not bad. Let me offer a counter interpretation:

Lex sees a chance to cement his place in the history books as the man who proved the metahuman thesis and formed the Justice League to combat "the alien menace," even if it's a menace he has to create - Clark or Doomsday, What supports this:

1) Seeking access to Zod's remains and the scout ship.

2) Seeking approval for kryptonite he absolutely intended to bring into the country with or without.

3) The smile on his face when he sees that Bruce had stolen the kryptonite. This allows him to appear blameless in anything that happens to Bruce.

4) Forcing the confrontation between the two.

5) Threatening to burn Martha when a gun would be just as effective. It's possible that this was intended to be Lex's way of letting Superman know exactly how he'd been had, similar to Finch. Had the frame gone as planned, he'd have had his mercs burn Martha anyway, a murder method that he could plausibly lay off on Superman, claiming he was dangerously insane.

6) The information he'd accumulated concerning metahumans. The real smoking gun for me is that he'd even created specialized logos for each of them, as if he planned on commercially "branding" them at some point in the future. Two files are conspicuously missing - Bruce's and Clark's. Either Bruce pulled those out before forwarding them to Diana, or they never existed to begin with. My money's on the latter, as Lex planned on one being dead, and the other a fugitive for murder.

In my theory, Lex fully expected Clark to deliver Bruce's head. He'd have given Clark some faraway, bogus location for Martha, set Doomsday on either a timed release(or left the AI with instructions to release it when Superman next entered the genesis chamber, and went into hiding. Clark would return and immediately find himself in the fight of his life, freeing up Lex's men to find and eliminate Lois - the one living person besides Clark who could contradict his version of events.

"You're not just anyone. Some day, you're going to have to make a choice. You just have to decide what kind of a man you want to grow up to be, Clark. Whether that man is a good character or bad, it's going to change the world."

"You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble. They will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders"

Why does Jor-El contradict himself?

Simply put, you have a low cinematic IQ, or some sort of Stockholm syndrome, from overexposure to bland, safe, PC and souless mass-produced blockbusters, which has conditioned you into accepting the absolute lowest-common denominator standards in filmmaking, writing and cinematography as somehow acceptable, when you should in fact feel nothing but contempt or disgust for any Kevin Feige-conveiced product.

Even strictly in the field of capeshit entertainment, where the bar has always been pretty low, since they're primarly a children media, the level of genuine quality and creative abilities (which comes from studios giving freedom to an auteur with a strong personality and vision towards the material) has kept dropping since the 90's.

When Raimi's Darkman/Spider-Man, Del Toro's Blade 2/Hellboy, Burton's Batman 2 or Bird's The Incredibles offered innovative and playful set pieces, meaningful and relevant themes, each with a very distinct, appropriate tone and truly cinematic aesthetics (simply compare the lighting or editing to today's equivalents), none of these qualities are to be found in Civil War or any of the previous MCU entries. This is why Edgar Wright got fired from Ant-Man. This is why Feige keeps hiring visionless point-and-shoot directors who come from TV or comedy, colorblind cinematographers and art/set design teams who seem to be in love with grey, sterile hangers for some unexplainable reason. Action scenes are now being conceived by CGI teams months before the movie begins shooting and all follow the exact same formula.

Even as a child, I couldn't imagine being dazzled or amused by those turds, as they're utterly devoid of any charm, colors, magic or imagination.

Then someone, presumably you, replied to me with pasta that didn't answer my question.

The fact that you
1) dug out that pasta
2) posted it without answering my question
3) didn't add anything to it, and let the pasta do the talking for you
Says to me you KNOW your contrarian opinion is wrong, since you went on the defensive immediately and let someone else's words do the work for you

I'm done with this Mickey Mouse-tier soap opera drama. It doesn't help either that all the fight scenes are edited by a teenager with Tourette's and Parkinson's, it's as if they want to distract the audience from how shoddy everything looks by waving a flashlight on their face. I couldn't give a damn about any of these sterile excuses for characters. During the airport scene all the artificially-inflated conflict devolved into a child playing with one toy in each hand and bashing them together.

It's riddled with sophomoric and shallow pseudo-political ponderings that are thrown out the window when the quiptastic action starts. They completely disregard for the umpteenth time the collateral damage while they're having fun showcasing their flashy abilities.

The third act pretends to get serious when in reality it turns into a cheap heartstring manipulation revolving around "why didn't you tell me Cap waaa".

This part completely disregards the fact that Stark knows all too well that brainwashing and mental manipulation is a thing, let's not forget that he has witnessed it firsthand with Banner. There's no excuse for him to have such a sudden change of heart other than to extend the conflict for another 15 minutes of mindless violence, and leave the manchildren with the impression that they've just witnessed an intricate revenge tragedy.

All smoke and mirrors, the constant quipping is an effective tool to cloud a fanboy's mind and judgement.

Finally, what's left is an entire team of "world-class" heroes that got fooled by a man wearing a Bucky mask. Not to mention that the villain's stale trope was better executed 19 years ago when Scream 2 came out, ironically, a film satirizing this cliché.

If you don't think this is cartoonish and laughable you might be too young to post on this site.

Never again.

You're lying. He was in charge of the creative direction of the franchise. His enabler wife was the producer. He was personally responsible for every dumb inclusion in the movie. The flash tease was his late-production idea. The JLA tease was his. He had final cut on the movie, which is overwhelmingly apparent from what was kept and what was cut. He kept his 3deep masturbatory imagery and redundant dream sequences and cut critical exposition for time.

>Or does she? Gosh, they never SHOWED it or SAID it.
Ambiguous third acts work considerably better than ambiguous first acts. We don't see Lex learn or earn anything. He just knows everything about all the characters. He just gets access to Zod and the ship with no exposition to explain why, other than a hacky vague quid pro quo quip from an unnamed Senator character. He gets nothing from committing treason and terrorism. Half the movie is him doing things that he doesn't really need to do, and that don't actually advance the plot at all. It's a meandering, redundant, belligerently dumb mess. They didn't "not show" the scene they promised in the trailers where Superman appears before congress in what is implied to be an ideological dramatic stand. They "didn't fucking write" it. They literally blew up the movie to avoid having to write thoughtful, DIRECT, dialogue. He was too lazy to be specific so he just filled the movie with vague shit. THEY LITERALLY KILLED SUPERMAN BECAUSE ZACK DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO WRITE CHARACTER DRAMA TO EXPLAIN WHY BATMAN WOULD BE LEADER OF THE JLA IF SUPERMAN WAS ALIVE. HE KILLED THE PROTAGONIST IN THE SECOND MOVIE BECAUSE HE WAS TOO LAZY TO WRITE A GOOD THIRD MOVIE.

Please stop trying to compare Time Warner's Warner Brothers Productions' Detective Comics Comics' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to competent movies, and please stop comparing Zack "I'm known for my ability to copy pictures" Snyder to actual filmmakers.

> I really believe this — and I think it’s obvious — I believe superheroes, they’re our modern myths. They’re our mythology in the modern world, and myth is designed to tell us about ourselves. In the ancient world, a volcano would go off or the stars would fall from the sky, and they would make a myth up around it to help ancient man to sleep at night or understand it, or at least to have a way of dealing with these things that were outside of their control. So, they’d make a story about a god on a mountain or whatever it is. And I think that’s kind of what our superheroes can do for us, they can help us explain our world a little bit.

please m8. Why are you debasing yourself like this? The central mystery isn't "ambiguous." It's a fucking mystery. It generally gets solved. And if you actually don't understand the difference between the ambiguity I've repeatedly spelled out about the first act of BvS, and the "ambiguity" of something like the first act of No Country, I'm embarrassed to be speaking to you.
>The data Batman downloaded revealed he'd been watching the metas for years.
Yep. That's not good exposition. That's not well-executed storytelling. It was a lazily added on subplot to tease the JLA. He spends the entire movie bullshitting about space god and then oh yeah he was conveniently spying on all of the future JLA guys. That explains why he knows who Batman is. He just does!
>Other than the usual archvillain goals of world conquest?
He blows up congress with a wheelchair supplied by him, to a person who was recieving payments from him, with a jar of piss and evidence connected to him in the room, for no logical reason and zero personal gain. Risk/Reward. He risked everything to gain nothing. If his goal is "world conquest," he's incompetent and stupid.

That's one example to isolate the point. Didn't feel like going into why or how Batman knew what Kryptonite did or would know about it being smuggled in before he figured out that Lex/LEXCORP was involved. Didn't feel like going into how mindless Superman stopping Batman during the convoy attack without checking out what he was even after. Didn't bother going into how Lex knew that the Bat Signal on "fight night" was FROM Batman instead of TO him, or how he knew that it was an open "fuck you" to Superman. Or how Lex expected to not get caught after kidnapping and attempting to murder a reporter, that he expected to get away. Didn't mention the contradictory exposition that establishes at one point that Batman didn't know about the mean letters from Lex until the splosion, when it's later said that by Lex that the mean letters had been happening for 2 years.

That isn't the issue. The issue is that he was ok with the army of mercs with bazookas and miniguns driving around the city. The problem is the convenience and coincidence of him unknowingly preventing Batman from getting Kryptonite/allowing Lex to have it (and the subsequent lack of consequence when Batman just steals it OC 10 minutes later)

Cinema today is being made to different standards. A few decades ago, people were still looking to superheroes as examples of good behavior, or someone with great power using it to help others selflessly. Recently people are more cynical and also media-saturated. Studios figure heroes have to be dark and gritty and conflicted, otherwise the audience can't even begin to relate. Basically, they've dropped the assumption that the audience holds traditional American values. I'm not sure they're not right.
