In fact the original script Howard was completely in the right and Emmett was the antagonist manipulator so your whole author intent goes out the window because you don't know how much they want to draw from the old script on who's really the good guy and who's really the bad guy.

Nah, he was unstable and fundamentally self-centered. Not much is known about how he treated his wife and daughter, but one can make an educated guess based on the fact that he abducted a girl as his replacement "daughter" and ended up killing her. Plus he builds this apocalypse bunker with the express intention of it housing only himself and one such weird daughter/doll figure, who he basically chooses at random because she looks like MEW. Sure he allows Emmett in, but clearly has nothing but disdain for him and was basically looking for an excuse to kill him without making himself look bad in front of his fake daughter. He's sort of a Travis Bickle type guy, as the result of these festering neuroses that make him a dysfunctional monster in society, but finally gets the opportunity to be the hero, or at least be right, when the world ends. He fucks it up though, because his plan for MEW is delusional and unsustainable, he would have ended up killing her eventually if she didn't make a move to escape.
