We all agree Aliens > Alien right? It has better developed characters and a more interesting plot for one thing.

Anyone who calls the first Alien smarter as well is just fooling themselves, it's a generic horror and not that great at all.

calling Alien generic horror renders any argument you might have had invalid. inb4 hurr just a slasher in space. no, that was only the second half. as a whole the movie was wildly creative and nothing like it has been made since

This pretty much.
Alien nails the atmosphere and suspense to a T. Aliens is a better action movie absolutely and is just generally more fun. Both satisfying movies but for different reasons.

the Xenomorphs in Aliens are "2 Bullets and they're dead" video game memes.

Ripley was a frightened Warrant Officer in Alien.
In Aliens she somehow became Rambo just by picking up a gun.
>>
>>69207481
The only better developed character in Aliens is Ripley, and that's because she already had the groundwork laid out in the first film - and her character was entirely changed for the second movie.

The rest of the characters were just standard archetypes.

I'll give you that the plot was more interesting. I think that Scott did with Alien what Cameron ironically did decades later with Avatar - he found a new way to tell a very unoriginal story. Alien is basically just a sci-fi skin slapped over a horror template, but it's about the technical skill and artistic proficiency with which he tells the story.

Aliens is a very basic story (though still more of a story than Alien) with basic characters and Cameron's trademark shitty understanding of what makes a strong female character. Ripley in Alien was a badass originally written as a man and then played solidly by a woman. Ripley in Aliens is muh mother figure, and literally (actually literally, not /tv/ literally) all of her heroics stem from a maternal instinct to save her Newt, her surrogate daughter.

Also, the music was better in Alien. And the Alien was meant to be this unstoppable force of nature, a perfect organism. In Aliens they just fucking run in swarms towards turrets and get mown down in droves. And then the Alien Queen was retarded, another attempt of Cameron trying to give the good mother an antagonist in the bad mother.

If Aliens was the only Alien movie, it'd be great. And it's a great movie. But it's a really, really shitty sequel. It destroys the mystery and terror of this unstoppable entity and begins the franchise's slow decline, which it has never recovered from.
>>
Aliens is for teenagers who like shit to go pew pew kaboom a lot. Alien is for adults.
>>
>>69208617
Terminator 2 is a much better "unstoppable killing machine" movie than Alien.

Can we get a "don't need no man" general?
Ripley is cool and all but Alien 3 and beyond really captured the strong independent archetype.
I mean that scene where she shuts off bishop decapitated head and leaves him in the dumpster after she got what she needed.. that defines the essence of what it's all about
>>
>>69208227
I agree. Both are excellent, whichever you prefer is personal preference.

>>69208880
>Alien is basically just a sci-fi skin slapped over a horror template, but it's about the technical skill and artistic proficiency with which he tells the story.
I agree. The bare bones of it is a slasher film in space, yet it manages to make that interesting, which is a real feat. The way it makes all the technology and characters feel very grounded is one aspect I really like, everything is set up to be ordinary and routine.
>>
>>69208880
>he found a new way to tell a very unoriginal story. Alien is basically just a sci-fi skin slapped over a horror template, but it's about the technical skill and artistic proficiency with which he tells the story.

i don't understand why people say this like it's ever an insightful observation. it applies to most movies, including great movies. some great movies barely even have plots at all. film-making is an audio-visual craft and is too short a form for the kind of complex storytelling you get in novels

The Aliens special edition depicts the colonist life before they got wiped out, which I think is a mistake.

I rewatched Aliens and it really bothered me how they could mow down a dozen of them with turrets and not melt a hole right down through the hull of the ship. A single drop of facehugger blood was supposed to penetrate several layers of steel and somehow that stops being a concern.

>>
>>69213306
Eh, I like the colonist sequence, it was nice to see the derelict again. I can see why some don't like it thought.

Correct, the Alien directors cut is shorter.

Personally, my preferred version of Alien would be the fanedit "Alien: The Hybrid Cut", but it was made back in like 2007 so it isn't in HD and I can't seem to find it anywhere. It combines the Theatrical with the Directors cut, adding ~9 minutes to the Theatrical.

Here's a list of the changes/additions/alterations:

>Restores 1979 Fox Fanfare
>Alien transmission scene, but using the sound fx from the original deleted scene not the Director's Cut
>Kane holding a gun while examining the egg
>The rest of the crew watching Kane being examined from the corridor and Ripley fighting with Lambert
>Ash examining Kane's x-rays as the crew members return
>Extended the scene with Parker and Brett working, with part of the alternate deleted scene with Ripley, a second's worth of Theatrical cut footage was removed here to smooth the transition
>Parker and Ripley arriving after Brett has been taken by the Alien
>Ripley asking Lambert if she slept with Ash
>The infamous cocoon sequence, which has been moved to before Ripley sets of the self-destruct
>>
>>69213066

No it doesn't. He's said numerous times that the Special Edition is his intended cut.

>“This is Jim Cameron. What you’re about to watch is the special edition of Aliens. I actually prefer this version to the released version, because, as it’s been best described by one of my friends, it’s 40 miles of bad road. I think it’s a longer, more intense and more suspenseful version of the film. The conventional wisdom then was: don’t make the film too long. But at two hours and 37 minutes, this is the ride that we intended you to take. So, enjoy it.”

>Source: Aliens Special Edition into on the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set

It's stated on the commentary for the Special Edition that Fox made him cut the footage

>These scenes had been deleted from the original theatrical release as 20th Century Fox representatives thought the film was showing "too much nothing" and spent an unnecessary amount of time building suspense.[12]

Sigourney was the one mad about Ripley's daughter plot being cut.
>>
>>69224972
I own the quadrilogy and this is the exact opposite of what I remember him saying

I remember his specifically saying it was a good idea to cut the scenes with Newt's family, for example, because it showed the colony too early instead of keeping the mystery of "what happened here?" when they find it as a ghost town

confronted with this evidence however I admit my memory must be flawed

That's why it was cut. Although it was a good way to show the Aliens attempts to break in before they found they could get in through the vents.

One thing that always bugged me, is why dos the chest bruster cheat its way through the toughest bone in the human body, when it can just move down a half of foot and avoid the rib cage entirely? Also more than having a giant hole in your chest, would it be theoretically possible to survive the experience since from what I see, just eats it way out of you, and doesn't go after any of your organs.

Also, how does it manage to ram through someone's sternum? If it can get through that, breaking through a shirt should be easy, but it takes 2-3 pushes to do that.

There is no better film made than Aliums, ever. That includes the suspense driven horror of the original.

Certainly no adult rated action film can compete with Aliums' combination of horror atmosphere, great developing characters, recitable dialogue, battle scenes, iconic styles and scenes.

Having quite recently rewatched the Aliens SE, Cameron does indeed say that it is the version he considers the correct one to watch. Aliens is just a really well done action film, but it isnt really thought provoking is it?
>>
>>69227674
the abyss is shit however you put it

They're both great films, but Alien is the better one in my book. The characters feel more like real people in Alien and the atmosphere and pacing were much better.
>Anyone who calls the first Alien smarter as well is just fooling themselves, it's a generic horror and not that great at all.

And it still got a higher rating than Avengers 2, which may not have been great, but it was definitely better than Hobbit 2.

There are only a handful of folders that they be placed in the library section unless they are extremely blatant and create their own folder in the library.

Deal with it.

The script had to disarm the marines of their magazines for them to lose against those overrated cockroaches.

Was the flamethrower ever effective against aliens? Only saw them burn the eggs.
>>
>>69223992
>It's one fucking line
>in fact it WAS stopped in that very film.
It's one fucking line that's supported by the rest of the film. It was "stopped" by being blown out into space (and that didn't even kill it, though it would presumably soon). I'm not saying the Alien is literally invincible, just that it's this sinister force of nature.

>>69223992
>Probably because you're a pleb who doesn't even know that was a cut scene
That's actually a fair point, I didn't know that.

It wasn't a proper napalm flamethrower, One that covers them in sticky flammable liquid they can't remove. It appeared to be a make-shift one, that just produced a burst of flame, which wouldn't do much to the alien exoskeleton. The aliens have an exoskeleton, right?

The flamethrower probably had more of a psychological effect on them.

Alien > Aliens from a filmcraft and intellectual perspective.

It depends which you are looking for. One if great movie that is entertaining. One is a very good movie that is insanely entertaining.

This.
People assume xenomorphs to be angry hive mind ants since aliens. Prior to that film however, the beauty was in the mystique of the creature. Alien will always be superior because it forced the viewer to imagine.
I like aliens but it attempted to fill in the blanks and destroyed the mystique.

Alien is my ultimate comfy movie. A few months ago I watched it every night for two weeks straight. It's beautiful. Pure horror. The story is perfect, the cinematography is perfect, the angles are perfect, the special effects are perfect, the atmosphere/tone are perfect. The first half is a slow, beautiful buildup of suspense, discovery, etc and the second half is complete chaos. Its pacing is brilliant, and its two halves run at completely different tempos. Perfect movie.

Aliens is a good movie too but aside from being a completely different genre it also nullifies the beauty and the mystery of it all. I think it's only preferable for people who wanted Alien to just "get to the action" or whatever.

I think Alien is a more impressive feat in filmmaking. However, I find them equally entertaining.

One thing I like about Alien was how it portrayed space travel not as a marvelous frontier, but as a gritty, blue collar job. Not a once in a lifetime job that few are lucky enough to partake in, but a job that somebody HAS to do. I've always thought that was an interesting aspect of the movie that often gets overlooked.

>>
>>69233831
I think the alien head looked better in 1 on the close-ups because it was a cooler design, and that the sets in 1 are awesome, but I don't see how anyone can say 1 has superior creature effects. The egg, facehugger, chestburster, and ayylmao in the vents all looked more fake. Really the only time the alien looks great in 1 is in the close-ups which is fine because that's like 90% of all the shots, but of all the things to criticize 2 for, that seems very silly
>>
>>69233996
I'm not criticizing 2 for having bad effects, I'm saying 1 managed to have better ones despite being older. 2 had excellent effects especially for its time.

In 2 sometimes the aliens looked very strange hopping around, exploding and whatnot. That scene with Vasquez in the vent. In 1 it looked fantastic every time it was shown. Besides, SFX doesn't exclusively refer to the creature itself. It's everything and how well the environment immerses the audience into its realm. I think 1 does it better in pretty much every way.

Aliens is one of the best action movies ever made.
>>
>>69235241
>>69236000
I prefer how the egg opens in the first movie instead of the "peel back" in the second, but the first movie's egg unquestionably looks more fake and plasticy, especially when he's shining the light through it to see the motion inside.

>>69235860
Chestburster looks fake as fuck in Alien 1 and the scene where the alien pops out to hug Dallas in the air vent also looks pretty silly. Also, that weird pose the alien is doing right before Ripley opens the airlock. Also, how goofy the alien looks banging around the ship on the end of the speargun tether.

I'm just not seeing how you would say Alien is less "clunky" than Aliens instead more. This has nothing to do with being the better movie BTW
