an HDMI cable for movies and the 2 shows I watch a week.

I read comcast is partnering with Roku and making an app that will act the same as having a cable box and you'd be getting all the channels and shit like a normal box (as long as you already have a cable sub).

So I might look into getting a Roku 4 if that's the case.
we already have cable, i just don't have a box in my room

Same. I have a ps4 and technically I have a "smart" tv, but the only thing I ever use for streaming is my roku.

Is there any reason to ever upgrade to the 4 if I don't currently have or plan to get a 4k tv anytime soon?

well, there's nothing interesting to see from my RPi2. I just put it in a cheap clear-case.
Since CEC is supported on the RPi2, I just use the remote controle of my TV or sometimes a small keyboard.

but OSMC is a quiet good looking Raspbian based OS.(can take screenshots later today, since it's currently used)
It is basically Kodi, so I have a wide range of addons to choose from.
I currently use Exodus to stream my movies and tv shows, but I can also watch my downloaded movies, which are located on my PC, over a SMB connection
I could also directly torrent on that thing, but I stay away from that
>>
>>69202482
Kinda. It seems pretty pointless to upgrade if you have the 3, but I haven't really looked into it and I don't know if there's something special about the 4 that might make it worth while
>>
>>69202593
The 4 is shit that overheats, and if you don't have a 4K tv, then you're even dumber for getting it.

osmc is based on a full Debian system, which basically means you/others can set up a lot of things

for example, you can use retropie directly in osmc with a script (if you care about playing retro games) ://discourse.osmc.tv/t/howto-retrosmc-retrogaming-on-osmc/6671
or set up a hotspot and overclock your pi directly in osmc
I also think it has a great community support and a great dev-team, who also implement their own features

also the gui is very lightweight (a plus for the performance) and imo the best looking one

I just ordered a kit for one of these and a remote that should be showing up in the next few days. I've been using my ps3 and media server/sickbeard for years but lately I've been getting fed up with cinavia.

I'm really worried about how the software is going to handle upscaling and picture formating, the ps3 is flawless at it and I'm used to that, the last time I tried to set up a media center pc(which was years ago admittedly) I had to constantly fuck with settings to get most things even halfway watchable.

it's possible that it could increase your performance in some points, but that must not be the case
and since assumingly everything just works on openelec for you, I'd say stick with what you already are comfortable with using, since (currently) there isn't much you for your usage can benefit from switching to osmc
>>
>>69208057
hold up. did you order a Raspberry Pi 1?
BIG mistake! the RPi3 goes for the same price, has an ALOT better performance and even a WiFi chip

and since you probably have a tv with hdmi, why even buy an extra remote? you can controle your rpi with just the remote of your tv

if you realy did get the RPi1, i'd send it back and just get a RPi3 with a 3000mA powersupply, a 16gb class 10 micro sd card and maybe a cheap case which includes heatsinks

if the wdtv is on a network the local drive will be shared and you can just put movies on it over the network. Also the WDTV can stream movies from windows shared folders anywhere on the lan. The later generation devices support HULU and Netfix streaming as well.

Aren't Rokus just media servers aka streamboxes? What can they do that my laptop or game console can't?

My friend tried to convince me that they were awesome and touted "free TV and movies" but really it just seems to be an android box with a simple interface for people too retarded to skim through links on a site like primewire. Like you search for a show or movie on the box and then pick from a list of links straight from primewire or a similar site.

If for some reason you dont have a media server device and your pc cant stream t your TV then ok I see the use, but otherwise what's the point?
>>
>>69235451

>>

>aren't Rokus just media servers

No

>aka streamboxes?
Do you know what the difference between that and a server is?

>really it just seems to be an android box

Roku is not Android based either.

>If for some reason you dont have a media server device

You keep saying "server" without understanding what the word means.

Why are you in this thread when you're this ignorant?
>>
>>69235580
>No

Then what else do they offer?

>Do you know what the difference between that and a server is

Technically yes, but they serve the same purpose in this context. I can download something like Universal Media Server to my laptop and eliminate the need for one of these streaming boxes, yes?

>Roku is not Android based either

And yet it seems to serve the exact same function as all the android tv boxes you see being sold. The OS isn't really the question here, it's the functionality.

>You keep saying "server" without understanding what the word means

I do. Do you? Can you not read between the lines and take things in context or do you have to dissect and respond to every word of my post literally and individually?

>Why are you in this thread when you're this ignorant?

Because I'm clearly trying to find out what it is these things do that makes them appealing. I thought my eagerness to learn more about them from the users was blatantly fucking obvious given the nature of my post, but I guess I was expecting too much of you.

>>69235485

I got a pi3 kit but I didn't do enough research to know that there was software that was hdmi cec capable, I'll still probably use the remote for non media center applications regularly enough for it to be worth it at $13 and I also just like the idea of having a big chunky qwerty/touchpad remote lying around, probably wouldn't have bothered if I had known though

seriously though, does anyone know which pi media center software is best at reliably upscaling/formatting?

No.

No, it doesn't.

>Because I'm clearly trying to find out what it is these things do that makes them appealing

You can't even figure out how to describe the tech. Go read up on Roku instead of spouting a bunch of stupid assumption? Everything you need to know is a googling away.

use my Xbone. Got Plex, HBO, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, connect my Hard Drive for local files, Blu-Ray player, stream my music to it, and I could cast other media to it too.

I'm too much of a retard when it comes to other shit. That's why I got a Bone for media consumption not so much gaming. I might later get a more tech savvy friend to set up one of these kodi things, but I'm content with my Xbox for now

>It is not a media server. Look up what a media server is

Again avoiding the actual question here. Its a media center device. Just another streambox. Research indeed confirms this.

>No.

It would seem so. Since it just streams content from the web and connected devices to a TV which is exactly what my laptop with UMS does.

>No, it doesn't.

It really does, according to all the available info. Only difference I can see is that it doesn't run on android and that roku became the first establish name in streaming boxes so certain cable providers have created exclusive streaming channels for it.

>You can't even figure out how to describe the tech

I think everyone understands me just fine, it's just that not everyone is some autist like you who spergs out at media center/streambox being used interchangeably.

>Go read up on Roku

Did a crash course before asking, which is what lead to my "stupid" assumptions that are seemingly 100% true if you ignore the mislabeling of the box itself. The more I read the more my suspicions are confirmed.

>Everything you need to know is a googling away

Sometimes actual feedback from the users is a more efficient way of gathering the info you need. Sometimes the users are retards like you who offer nothing but non-answers that contribute absolutely nothing. It's a toss-up really.

I'm here to discuss to subject matter and in case you forgot this isn't the "roku experts" thread. So really I should be asking you why you're even here.

Pretty new to it all. Got a fire stick two or so weeks ago. Yeah, it's ui is totally all about Amazon but I'm ok with that and who knows I may get prime down the line (if anything for the free shipping). Got Netflix now, a free month of prime and just installed kodi and a bunch of other apps not included on the device the other day. Pretty cash. I can't understand how cable tv is alive. There really is no going back.

Stop using the words "server" and "streambox" interchangably, then. You just look fucking stupid. Seriously.

>It would seem so. Since it just streams content from the web and connected devices to a TV which is exactly what my laptop with UMS does.
No, you're 100% wrong. You have no idea what you are talking about right now. You are very confused.

>It would seem so.
Android is not the same as the Roku OS. Period. They are not interchangeable. You are mixing things up out of laziness and ignorance.

>Sometimes the users are retards like you who offer nothing but non-answers that contribute absolutely nothing. It's a toss-up really.
This is hilarious considering that you are woefully confused as to what a device is and what it does.

>So really I should be asking you why you're even here.
No, ask yourself that. You're the one who is confused here. Go read about what you're discussing some more because everybody reading this thread can see that you are very confused.

I have a Roku 3 on my network attached to my TV. What's nice is that it has bluetooth and I just just throw shit up on it no problem. What's nice is my living room is right off my kitchen and I like to listen to music when I cook so I'll use Pandora or another music service through it to jam out while I make baller food (all my best audio stuff is attached to my TV).

Anyway it's easy to network and has decent support. Unlike OP though I don't like the remote; I would prefer to use a keyboard to search and as far as I know it doesn't support that.

Who said they don't output 1080p?
They don't handle 23.976fps material correctly.
No android box does.
It's all about fudging the output rather than processing it accurately.

Also don't handle TrueHD or Dolby Atmos correctly

Face it - for true high quality, you need a to step away from your mass-produced chink shit device with the processing power of a mobile phone.

Get a decent Htpc or streaming device with proper high quality chipsets to experience material in the best possible quality.
