Why is Lynch so fucking good at using pop/rock music? Roy Orbison, Julee Cruise, songs in Mulholland Dr that fit amazingly well with his scores and music by Badalamenti.

I can't think of many directors that can pull this off, when people like Wes Anderson do it it's fucking awful. Wong Kar-Wai is good at this too, but who else?

Scorcese has the best music selections, especially in Goodfellas. Kubrick didn't do a lot of pop or rock but his music selections were still great

He was fine but he went full retard with the music in Casino and it got pretty annoying. Every scene doesn't need four consecutive 30 second clips of classic rock / pop songs.

I think it just compliments all the bad vibes you get from his movies really well

What's up with Mulholland Drive's ability to stick in your head so well? I remember that scene, as well as many other really clearly, something I can't say for many other movies.

That's what happens when the movie sets that brooding/mysterious tone early. It changes the ways you interpret every scene, even if they may not have any hiding meaning sometimes. It makes you distrust simple explanations.

1:40 is the strangest bit of sax I've heard in any song, it's like Lynch asked to have it put there.
