Kylo Ren is a double agent. Luke Skywalker sent him under cover. Kylo shows Han this with his ability to reach into minds and vice versa. Han sacrifices himself so Kylo doesn't have to kill him.
This is why his greatest fear is that he will never be as strong as Darth Vader. He fears he won't have the strength to throw the dark side away as his grandfather did.
Figured as much, but it wasn't really foreshadowed in depth.
This is almost as stupid as the fan theory that Snoke was Sheev's gay lover.

Doesn't that somewhat echo Jacen Solo's story? In that in trying to do the right thing, he ultimately lost himself in the dark. That's about the only way I would accept the dumbass double agent Kylo theory.
