Witch is great. Best horror movie I've seen in a long time, but thats probably not saying much. No jump scares so if you're into that sort of stuff you won't like this.

Haven't seen Babadook, movies /tv/ loves are generally terrible so I don't rush out to see them.

>Why is the goat so smug, pham?

bc hes alpha as fuck

>"If we wanted him to be doing something violent, he wanted to go to sleep. If he was supposed to be standing still, he was running around like a madman," Eggers recalls. He credits Ford, the film's editor, with piecing together whatever usable footage they had into the acclaimed performance.

>No one in the cast had a rougher time with Charlie than Ralph Ineson. A veteran British actor with a bassy voice and large, aristocratic features, Ineson, 46, had to drop 30 pounds to play the family patriarch, a starving farmer. That left him at a distinct disadvantage when he was called upon to wrestle Black Phillip, as dictated by several scenes in the script.

>"I didn't have a lot of gas in the tank, really," Ineson says of sparring with the beast, who weighed about 50 pounds more than him. "He was horrible. Really, really horrible. From the moment we set eyes on each other it was just kind of hate at first sight. He had two modes: chilling out and doing nothing, or attacking me."

>On the fourth day of filming, Charlie rammed his serrated horns into Ineson's ribs, dislodging a tendon. "Everything hurt," Inerson recalls. "I spent the rest of the five-week shoot on painkillers."

The second the goat responded, it's like the movie kicked into a higher gear. I didn't expect it at all. I want to watch it again with the knowledge that Black Phillip is Satan and everything being done is to separate Thomasin from her family and tempt her to serve him.

>So you won’t tell us whether Thomasin was evil all along, or only becomes desperate at the end?

No offense, if that was anyone’s reading, but for people who think Thomasin was evil all along: “Once upon a time there was a story of a witch”—that’s the movie, and that’s not a very interesting story. So I will say that much.

But there are clues about different interpretations. So, for example, the rot on the corn is ergot, which is a hallucinogenic fungus, so if you wanted to take that route, you could. It’s not necessarily my route, but there are multiple ways in.

>It’s not necessarily my route, but there are multiple ways in.

I don't see him saying it's all a hallucination, just that people could interpret it that way
>>
>>69182098
I didn't say he said it was all a hallucination, though, or anything about the film's interpretations. I said that he has said it's ergot on the corn, and that there are strains of ergot which grow on corn. Both are true.

Creepy, not at all scary. Nice acting and the way the whole thing plays out is pretty well done, but people are blowing how scary it was way out of proportion. Its like seeing an old woman with a face like someone whos on their death bed when youre walking down the street, it doesnt make you run behind cover and cry for help, you just think "that was kindof spooky" but after the moment has passed all the fear is completely gone, the movie had a creepy vibe to it but ultimately did nothing with it in my opinion. At least it wasnt jump scares.

Am I being rused here? I can't believe the majority of /tv/'s response is this positive.

I feel like a total contrarian for saying it, but this sucked.
It was like The Village 2.0, except it had better actors and the score was good.

I watched it tonight, this was my reaction

>hmm, it seems to be taking its time setting the scene, but I'm enjoying it
>wow there's a sexy witch I'm the woods, I hope she shows her tits- nevermind
>the pacing is kind of slow, I wonder what the climax will be
>a bunch of stupid shit in the last 15 minutes
>dad killed by chopped wood, mum killed by failing to disarm her daughter after being cut, twins disappear
>naked 12 year old grill for no reason other than fanservice for paedos
>ends with flying bitches

You lied to me /tv/, you told me it was a great horror film. It's not. It's a decent period drama, with an emphasis on religion/cultism/witchcraft. There is barely any horror.
>>
>>69175354
This interpretation breaks down when you consider the scene when the younger children all start speaking in tongues. You could argue we still are seeing things from Thomasins perspective then but I don't think so. I think the movie is much more powerful and insightful when taken as a straightforward meditation on evil and faith.
>>
>>69187807
To add to this, I thought the Babadook was shit too.

It should have ended with the kid getting his throat cut, and the mother only realising what she'd done after he was dead.
>>

>>69187997
You see an implication that the witch has killed the baby and rubbed it's mashed up remains on her skin.

The goriest part of the film was when the dad gets impaled by the goat.
>>
>>69188189
The movie was excellent at establishing character motivations and perspectives which makes the horrific aspects of it that much more effective. If you boil it down it's a fairly small scale affair but the way the tension was established and the tone that constantly keeps you engaged and on your toes made it feel considerably more mythic and allegorical.

The family is a bunch of psycho religious fanatics who blame all their troubles on witches. The father is a poor provider, the mother does nothing but complain, and the kids are all a burden.

This film is the emporers new clothes, and you're all falling for it.

You're being reductive. There was a lot going on with the family's struggles with religion and society on an individual basis, not to mention nature. The imagery was extremely scary at times, I know that's subjective but I haven't been so scared by a static shot of a beautiful woman for a long time and there were multiple examples of haunting imagery that was horrific based on context and performances alone. Also next time you're saying we're all being fooled at least spell emperor right.

What is Babadook tier supposed to imply, seeing as how it was one of the better recent horror movies to come out? Or is that just the usual /tv/ hipsterism?

>wonder why /tv/ is so hyped about this movie
>watch it
>At least half the shots are focused on a cute girl

It was alright, not enough buildup-payoff, things just sort of happened.
Finchy was pretty good.
Blair Witch is better imo.

are you really asking if /tv/ is shitposting or being sincere?

>niggers watching a movie about demon possession, witches, and general just fucking white people from the hang niggers era

It's almost meme status
It's very good but it isn't amazing.

I liked the Babadook but it's a disturbing as fuck movie that I probably won't ever want to watch again. The Witch is kind of misadvertised as a horror movie but it is pretty creepy with great atmosphere and I enjoyed it a lot. I guess there are actually rips out now so I'll probably rewatch it at some point.

Are you really complaining about buildup with no payoff and then saying the BWP is good in the same post? I do like the BWP but I remember seeing it in theatres when it came out and the reaction was pretty similar to what you get with this movie. Where the leadup to the end you can tell everyone is holding their breath in anticipation and then it just ends and everyone's like "that was it?".

Babadook tier in that it's another "drama" marketed as "hardcore horror".

Throw in the traditional "artsy" imagery, authenticity to make up for the overly generic plot and lack of "anything interesting happening" and you have the Plebbit crowd on /v/ hailing it is a masterpiece when in reality it's a Solid 6/10 at best that personally bored me to death.

It was ok, I liked it. Nothing terribly thought provoking or brilliant about it, but it was competently made.

It has some refreshing ideas and technically it's great. But when a horror movie doesn't even scare you or make your heart skip a bit there's just something wrong. I admit The Witch's artistic feel is well done but there's just something missing, one that made the likes of Rosemary's Baby great.

While somehow people dislike your opinion, I kinda agree with you.

But consider the following: what if Thomasin has no multiple personality disorder?
The movie is symbolic, and has many layers - the whole story can be about getting insane.
Thomasin murdered everyone, but she knows it. Maybe she fights it (like many serial killer).

Remember when she told her sister that she's the witch? Remember how upset she was?
Because she told her the truth.

While your version can be absolutely all right, I kinda like this one better.
She fights herself, she tries not to become a psycho, but she fails / "falls".

ALTHOUGH: It's absolutely possible that there's no "extra" symbolism and the whole thing actually happens.
If that's the case, then you have a completely opposite perspective: Thomasine is the scapegoat and she has to fight the witches and her hypocrite family at the same time.

There's no ultimate "theory" - that's the point.
It's up to you.
And that's why this is a wonderful film.

I feel the ambiguity is forced by having the baby scene at the start of the film. While it is understandable from a pacing and staging point of view the only way to keep the ambiguity was to not show Thomasin returning home without Samuel.

Actually if you keep fucking with a goat and grabbing it by the horns then you're conditioning it to start using them and fight back. We had a farm at my high school and I remember all the normies would fuck with the goat and try to wrestle with its horns so eventually it got conditioned into thinking bashing peoples' shit in was normal. One kid got his balls busted by the fucker.
