Yes - because there's the entire ending tying into it. The main plot of the movie has nothing to do with it but the ending does tie it in. The rest of these spergs just haven't watched the movie.

It is not set within the same universe. It's like they're both Twilight Zone episodes. There is no narrative continuity.
I think you should watch it though. It's a better movie than the original Cloverfield.

It's similar in tone/themes and has a few ARG lore things linking the two films, but shares no direct narrative connection to Cloverfield.
It's more of a spiritual sequel than anything, and apparently the guys at Bad Robot want to turn the Cloverfield brand into a series of anthology films in the same vein.
Which I am 100% okay with.
