There were tons of opportunities up to then, but every time I'd freak out and make my escape. Pretending to pass out once we got to her room, disappearing from the party when they were talking to someone else, ceasing all communication with any woman who showed a sign of romantic interest, making up fake girlfriends--I did a lot of embarrassing shit.
The worst case was this one time while walking a chick home from the club. I thought I'd prepared myself, I was soused to my fuckin' eyeballs, I'd picked up a complete stranger, it was her last day in the city (having just graduated) so she wouldn't be around to tell people I sucked at kissing or had stuck it in the wrong hole at first or came too quickly or whatever other worry was going through my mind. There was nothing to loose. But then, the second we were out in the streets, away from my mates, the anxiety struck again. I spent the rest of the walk home trying to convince her I was gay; my friends were religious homophobes, etc etc. Naturally, having just been groping her on the dance floor, this wasn't convincing in the slightest, and it was awkward as fuck. The look of sheer disappointment in her face when, standing on the threshold of her house, she asked one last time if I would come in and I said no still haunts me a little.
P.S. in the end my first was basically the most disconnected person from my life I could find. A budget hostel in rural Japan, a Taiwanese chick who barely spoke English.

Nah, I just live in NZ. Here, it's somewhat of a cultural tradition for people our age to spend a year before or after university travelling, paying their way by taking up odd jobs in each country (usually things like fruit-picking). Most do it with friends, but, being a NEET, I did it alone.
