It's about life and the universe anon, but in terms of Penn's character more about a depressed soul in modern society reflecting on his youth and trying to reconcile with his father after his brothers death.

I think it's masterpiece. You can say about any art movie that it's pretentious and boring, depending on your watching experience. I loved Tree of Life and will rewatch it next year.
