C-can we have a great movies thread for once?

I finally managed to track down Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace. Dusted up my old vhs player and set aside Friday for it. It's 403 minutes long though so it will pretty much eat up most of my night.

What great movies have you recently watched anons?

I'm thinking about seeing Patton next.

and Patton is in many people's opinions ( mine included ) the greatest portrayal of a character on screen
>>
>>69124563
Patton's probably one of my favorite films. I wish they still made epic films just like it.

>he greatest portrayal of a character on screen

That's a big statement. Not just a nonfictional person, but a character. That's all of film, with Patton being the best. How could anyone know that? What's the metric? How well the character is written vs. how well the actor performs vs. how good the director was in working with the actor. That's just an impossible thing to know.

Watch Come and See. It really is one of the best war films ever made. It's also a really uneasy watch knowing they used live ammunition during the filming.

You haven't seen enough. No one's seen enough. Ebert saw over 10,000 and he probably hadn't seen enough. That's just a fucking crazy thing to posture. And so pointless. The best portrayal of a character. Jesus.

I'm not versed in Russian films but I can suggest you this one as a thanks.

>>69125145
yeah the dvd feels like it was taken from a vhs which is too bad considering the strength of the camerawork.

Reminder that he literally took the money from Lucas' sweaty, hammy fists and gave the Phantom Menace this rating

I've spent the last while going through this and watching the ones I haven't seen. It's a great resource.

You should watch High and Low, pretty much the best Kurosawa flick that isn't about Samurai.
>>
>>69124563
I can't stand the over-acting and melodrama in Kurosawa movies.
>>
>>69129990
That's not really Kurosawa, but just Japanese movies in general.

Their actors are trained more like stage actors than movie performers.

The movie is from 1952 though so its pretty much in line with what the west was producing at the time anyway. You have to keep in mind that the Japanese movie industry was behind the times and they only just recently transitioned from the silent movie era. Then the war took a total shit on the country.

In postwar Japan, one of their oldest movie director was like 30. The entire industry restarted.

Thanks for the virus.
>>
>>69129990
>over-acting
It has to be big because jap faces are less expressive by default. With smaller eyes they don't project well on screen.
>>
Kanal. Surprisingly free of overt commie propaganda and you can tell the people behind the film actually lived through this shit.
>>
>>69124563
Ikiru is a solid 8

Doesn't matter because it depends entirely on culture. I forgot which side does which, west or east, but supposedly people either watch the eyes or the face when interacting.
