For me the the worst thing about Stannis' story line last season wasn't that his character was butchered; since that was consistent with all prior seasons.
What pissed me off is that as far as a story-line went... it just had a really shitty ending. There was no real pay-off or drama. After it was all done I felt like it was just a waste of time.
Stannis and his army wound up having exactly ZERO impact on the world around them.
They should have at the very least given us an actual battle with the aftermath having long reaching ramifications afterwards, even if the Boltons won.
It might have worked better to justify Roose's death if their victory had been a costly one. Perhaps with their forces ravaged, forcing them to play a dangerous game with the resentful northern houses.
You could do a lot with that to increase the tension for their part of the stoyrline, and the desperation.
That's what made the story in the book good at this point; both Stannis and Roose Bolton were each in precarious positions. Tension = good entertainment

I despise fantasy, but I really enjoy ASOIAF since it actually depicts how gritty medieval politics and society is. And GRRM is fantastic with character interaction and setting up inter-connected plot points along a vast narrative.
