>It's not good
Just because there are three or whatever laugh out loud moments doesn't mean it's not funny/fun. Martin Short as a coked up Doctor? Awesome. Josh Brolin as a tough on the outside to cover up his inert sexual confusion detective? Great. Joaquin Phoenix doing his thing? Amazing. The performances are great, the set design is phenomenal, there's comedy from the script to physical jests, every bit of the story is fun in one way or another. Part of the fun is, and I'll quote what I've posted before:

"People complain that the plot is "supposed to confusing" because the main character is confused. This isn't really true though, because the general story is not that confusing, but there are all these side things attached, all connected somehow. I found myself, when trying to decipher the plot, picking out one thing and trying to understand how it fit into the story. Then I realized, THAT is the part of the character the story is trying to emulate, not just general confusion. Doc was high and paranoid, drawing connections that aren't there. It's fun to speculate for yourself and, while understanding overall what's happening, figure what actually connects and what is just extraneous happenings made to look like they matter."

Beyond the plot, it has so much depth. No other film has made me want to break out a note pad and just observe. For example, look at the use of tears, or crying, in the film. Little things like that stand out as odd and I love that this films begs for you to figure them all out.

That's what I mean by "wholely entertaining". It's got comedy, mystery, romance, it's just so much fun to watch, while still having depth. Who knows, maybe that's thanks to Pyncheon, not PTA, but either way, that doesn't take away from the film.

Something I thought was kind of funny, and gets funnier upon rewatches, is this crying tone that Shasta Fay has when she's talking to Doc in the very beginning, and Doc just looking confused as fuck.

>>69125047
Not him, read my lengthy post above. It negates your criticism of "confusing for the sake of being confusing" and "boring" and "people only pretend to like it"

Notice the "arguments" against the movie. Then look at the analysis of the people who enjoy it. Here's one that was posted here a while ago

"But it really isn't the point to simply buy in to the plot that the characters assume, the film is a classic postmodern narrative, like many of Jacques Rivette's mystery films, that both suggests a plot and denies it in a skepticism of meta-narrative answers.

So what does that mean for this film? Inherent Vice is the exploration of a conspiracy that ended the hippie revolution, but also one skeptical of it, that wonders if it isn't a series of loosely connected events used as a defeatist explanation, or meta-narrative, to the hippie downfall. Was free love and free living really crushed by some quasi-supernatural force of infinite Right Wing reach? Or was the failure of the love generation its - excuse me for this - inherent vice? What the film shows us is a counterculture that is fractured and embroiled in internal conflict - the various gangs, drug dealers and dope fiends all out to score for themselves and fuck each other over - and stagnant hedonism - the children of LSD and marijuana becoming washed up heroin addicts and speed freaks.

Was a conspiracy even needed to take this 'revolution' down? Who knows. Doc doesn't. To suggest a final answer would be just another false meta-narrative to contextualize history."

I understand why some would dislike the movie, although I believe that if you go into it looking to have fun, it's immensely enjoyable. But to imply that it's bad is completely wrong

If you think that Pyncheon didn't mean to do every single one of those things, you're incorrect. He was very hands on with the film as well. So perhaps praising PTA as a genius for the film would be giving him too much credit, although I believe his decision to just let the camera sit and the story unfold was perfect. But, regardless of directors intent, I don't think that's giving the film itself too much credit at all.

>>
>>69125859
Indeed, I agree. The reception wasn't as violently positive as the ones for previous PTA films, but it was an all-around warm positivity. I liked it very much, it's a fully equipped filmmaker tackling hard material to be adapted and doing a nice job of it. I'd say 8/10

We know these were instant classics, they have enough action to make them bad ass. they're like High Brow Segal Action flicks. If it wasn't for the action in all of those movies, cept for There Wil Be Blood....

again you're giving it too much credit. the hippy movement was fostered and influenced by soviet kgb agents to try and degrade our society. i fucking hate hippies, i hate anything about them that doesn't show them as the cancer that killed our country

Sorry I just assume the hundreds of postshere that do nothing but bitch about other people's opinions without giving any of their own are being contrarian. Fair enough.
>>
>>69122113
Does anyone feel like it's harder for cult classics to be born? There's just too much content. People don't explore either. If it's not on Netflix people don't care. There's no swapping CDs or VHSes or anything of the sort anymore, not even flash drives as far as I've seen. Ratings also drive what they watch, no one goes out of their niche.
>>
>>69126251
I know, just Jackie Brown was so forgettable. It's just sort of a lot of shit packed in, without that real Tarantino Style. It was nice, but not the 'pulp' style he usually does, or skirts around, or flips or what he normally does.

To like Jackie Brown is to ignore the real style of the director in the first place. It's a good movie, but it's more just to appease the plebs that he can do a 'normal' movie. fuck off, I can watch netflix for that.
