I think it was a natural progression to mediocrity because he burned out writing his own material.
If you read Cronenberg's book titled Cronenberg on Cronenberg it details the processes in which he made movies by actually writing them. He only adapts other peoples work now and it's just not as good.
If you don't like his movies now that's the main reason.
