It would have only taken a few scenes to show off more prowess. Jaime bested Ned, and even gave Brienne trouble in his depleted state. But you take one little line, and give it a ton of importance? No one cares about that line but you. Everyone gets the idea that Jaime was an amazing swordsman before he lost his hand.

She is and it kinda sucks. Her main feats are melee Loras, starved Jamie, and infected Sandor but even with the handicaps those are the most impressive wins. A healthy Sandor matched a healthy Gregor and Oberyn one man showing Gregor before getting suckered are probably the other most mettle-proving fights in the show.

Then in hindsight the first season did A GOD DAMN fine job at adapting the books and changing little shit here and there for TV purposes (with some changes actually being better than the book) and what is even better elaborate and gave depth to characters we knew in the book but not enough at that time like Cercei and Robert.
