Wouldn't a space battle be completely computerized, take place beyond ranges perceivable by the human eye and be over almost instantly based on whoever gets the first "shot" off, whatever form that shot may be, and thus be completely unfun in a film?

The "fun" part would be the aftermath of the destruction where one of the few to make it to the escape pods/breathing apparatus has to watch his shipmates suffocating and drifting off into the void.
>>
>>69068903

Depends heavily on the ships' weapons and observation capability. Just shooting some objects (railguns etc.) at very high speeds at each other is more of a computer guessing game of avoidance patterns since the ships' idea of each others position is not real time.

Assuming we're talking about sub to low relativistic speeds it depends how good your active protection system is. If it's really good closing to close range to reduce the time they have to intercept could be a necessity.

Would laser weapons even work at those distances? And if they used projectiles, it should be possible for computer-controlled weapons to automatically intercept them.

Depends on the observation tech. Actually tracking few kilograms of metal traveling at high speed in the middle of space is pretty damn challenging.

Not really. If the enemy ship is maneuverable enough it can strafe and Dodge any large attacks.

You'd need bombs or missiles with AIs that can dodge incoming enemy fire in order to get a hit.

Ideally if you're set on lasers this idea from Ratchet Deadlocked was cool. Multiple enemy ships form a laser chain and ram the enemy ship.

Combat Wasps from the Night's Dawn trilogy is the best idea for real space combat.

In fact Night's Dawn describes most of spaceflight and combat mechanics very well indeed. I'd recommend for anyone who likes Sci-Fi.

The Lost Fleet series. Those ships generally engage at speeds of around 0.2 of light so the battles are all about taking hours to plan maneuvers and the actual shooting lasts fraction of a second followed by hours of slowly changing course again. Mostly because their ships have insanely accurate optics (and they move insanely fast) so any long distance attacks are trivial to avoid, though their idea of planetary bombardment is basically just dropping heavy metal tubes on the right course from those speeds.
>>

The only space-movie I can think of, where a ship is shown being refueled, is Fifth Element.

I can't find it anywhere
>>
>>69068903
It's /a/ content but Starship Operators is similar to this. The majority of each episode is crew interactions while they try to figure out a battle plan. No dog-fighting or close range ship encounters if I remember correctly.

Well fastest way of getting somewhere in space is to constantly thrust/accelerate until you have to flip around at halfway point to decelerate. Of course current technology is highly limited by the fuel so we have to rely on initial push and gravity aid to slowly get anywhere.

The key to space battles would be reaction times.
A ship would need to sense an incoming attack, process that data, then engage a counter, whether that be chaff, evasion, EW jamming, or point defense, all before taking the hit.
When the incoming weapon is rail gun slug or missile moving at a measurable % of c, the available reaction time can be pretty slim, depending on distances. When the incoming weapon is a laser moving at 1c, there is no reaction time without magical FTL sensors.

So "dodging" isn't so much moving in response to incoming attacks as much as it is zig zagging randomly and hoping for the best.
Forever War portrays this well. Space Battles are left to an onboard super computer that handles everything while the crew stays sedated in high-g crash couches and hopes for the best.

In addition to the speed of things in space, shows and movies need to do to a better job at portraying just how BIG space is.

>>69072777
Moreover, I'd say the actual key to space anything is detection range and evading being detected, just like air battles right now

Then, in secondary, reaction time

Once the technology gets to that point, yeah. But the early space battles, when the combatants still need to see each other and the weapons still need to be directed and fired manually, will be hella f*cking epic.
