I don't think Refn is a hack but some of the violence in Drive felt really jarring and out of place, op's pic most of all.
I almost wish the only gory moment was the elevator scene, it would've had more impact if we hadn't seen a closeup of Joan Holloway's head exploding 30 minutes earlier
