they knew each other a bit by then, what's really astounding is that they had to shoot this entire scene three fucking times since the first and second shoots were out of focus and/or bad audio quality. Crying your eyes out for the third day in a row and still delivering a believable and touching performance, that takes effort.

Actually frodo had the ring for years. In the book frodo inherits bag end and the ring and gandalf diappears for like 8 years. The whole time frodo had the ring. Also the trip takes several years i think. All in all it took 15 years with the ring before he started becomeing really possesive over it and only when it was working it's hardest to seduce him. But it all falls in line with hobbits being resistent to it's evil.

Some tolkien simple country folks are the only pure ones allegory.

Like i said. In the books everything took much longer. One of the only inaccuracies of the movie. The timeline was changed decidedly to create a sense of urgency in the action and create a coherent narrarative to go with the pacing. Pacing and sense of time and place were something decidedly missing in tolkiens books. I personally like it as it adds to the mystic folk lorish feel of the books but it's something that most modern fantasy writers are very aware of.

I wonder if the same would have applied to all hobbits. It's part of tolkiens agrarian fantasy that the hobbits are resistent to evil but we know that some of them are evil from the burning of the shire.

I thought that Saruman had simply gone in and raped the Shire with whatever forces he had left.

Yeah the sackville bagginses were trading with saruman before the fall of isenguard. They used the money to buy up debt and unused land and turned the shire into a plantation. Then after isenguard fell saruman showed up and starting forcing the indentured servants to become actual slaves and work in factories to help him build a new army.

You know something that bothered me in The Fellowship of the Ring? The fight between Gandalf and Saruman. They're Istari, Maiar in the flesh.

For a battle with such far-reaching consequences, it was presented as just a generic wizard fight. Since those events weren't fleshed out in the book, Jackson could have depicted it as what really happens when lesser gods oppose each other and why it's a bad idea to have Gandalf or anyone of similar power to go head-to-head with Sauron.

In other words, the devastation at Isengard could have began with that fight.

>>

It was a wizard fight because that's exactly what they were, don't forget that that they were limited in power by Eru, as he didn't want any more unbound Maia wrecking shit as they pleased and the Istari weren't meant to win the conflict by force. A full powered Maiar like Melian could shit out impregnable magical barriers that protected an entire kingdom and lasted for ages like it was nothing, which is something that clearly was way beyond the means of any of the Istari.

Reminder that George R R Martin, master of fantasy, claimed Tolkien's depiction of war was very dishonest, despite his service in the war to end all wars, because it didn't involve enough sexual violence.
>>
>>69058399
>how long did Bilbo keep the ring without going full Gollum?
Irrelevant since the ring wasn't really awake yet since sauron counted it as lost and was laying low in dol guldur.

That being said bilbo was very posessive and secretive about it. Wether it was lying to everyone when he first found it, or sperging out on gandalf.

Hobbits are naturally resistant to corruption because they had no ambition outside of drnking fucking and eating. Frodo was mostly fine until they got outside of mordor.

>Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?

>The war that Tolkien wrote about was a war for the fate of civilization and the future of humanity, and that’s become the template. I’m not sure that it’s a good template, though. The Tolkien model led generations of fantasy writers to produce these endless series of dark lords and their evil minions who are all very ugly and wear black clothes. But the vast majority of wars throughout history are not like that.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3110466/Game-Thrones-creator-defends-rape-scenes-Author-says-dishonest-boring-leave-sexual-violence.html

>'But if you’re going to write about war, and you just want to include all the cool battles and heroes killing a lot of orcs and things like that and you don’t portray [sexual violence], then there’s something fundamentally dishonest about that.

“The best fantasy is written in the language of dreams. It is alive as dreams are alive, more real than real ... for a moment at least ... that long magic moment before we wake.

Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic, done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines. Why do our dreams become so much smaller when they finally come true?

We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

They can keep their heaven. When I die, I'd sooner go to middle Earth"

>The Halls of Mandos stood on the northern shores of Valinor,[1] looking out across the Encircling Sea. They were said to grow in size as the World aged, and their walls were hung with the tapestries of Námo's spouse Vairë, depicting all the events of unfolding history.

>It was to the Halls of Mandos that the spirits of Elves and Men were gathered to await their different fates, and so Mandos was given its name of the Halls of Awaiting.[2][note 1] After a time, the immortal Elves could be re-embodied, and return from the Halls to their kin in Aman. Men had a different fate, a fate which, even among the Lords of Valinor, only Mandos and Manwë truly understood. No one, however, not even Morgoth, could escape the Halls without Mandos' permission.[3]

everyone goes to valinor
>>
>>69061712
EVERYTHING this fat nigger has written is the exact opposite of this. In fact he constantly bitches about this very depiction of fantasy and tries to go counter to it with all his ability.
Towers of Minas Tirith? The halls of Camelot? Yeah no shit but those are all from better works than anything he's shat allover a page. Thomas Malory was a medieval rogue and villain but the characters in Le Morte D'Arthur are STILL more likable, human and relatable than any fucking 'realistic' character this fat bastard has written.

>"People unfamiliar with the books have been asking, "What does a fantasy written fifty years ago have to say to the 21st century?" To that there are two answers.
>The first is that, despite Tolkien's attempts to distance himself from an autobiographical interpretation of the trilogy, the fact is that the books are clearly informed by the experience of the world wars, particularly that of a British junior officer in the First World War. Like Tolkien as a young man, Frodo takes part in a nightmare crisis that he cannot escape and that neither he nor his world seems likely to survive. The first half of the 20th century will not be the last time people face such a crisis. The film captures Frodo's desperation constrained by duty very well.
>The second answer is the trilogy's implicit model of history. In every age, evil takes another form. It can be defeated, and history allows some generations a holiday. However, we should not be surprised when the Shadow grows menacing again. It is hard to imagine a message more relevant to 2001."

But no, Martin's first thought is "BUT WHAT WAS ARAGORN'S TAX POLICY"

As far as I remember his First Age fortress was much further to the north, but it wouldn't surprise me if those mountains used to be an actual wall for something. Mordor's mountains are, literally, fortress walls for an entire country, because that's how Sauron's boss rolled.

>The Hobbit came out 2012

that can't be right.
>>
Anyone else completely incapable of remembering Tolkien's names? The characters, the races, the places. All this shit just blurs together in my head, even when I was a kid reading the books.

I don't understand how anyone remembers Valndor or Glorfnor or Moradru, how do you keep this shit straight?
>>
>>69068474

It's just nerd powers. Either you have it or you don't.
>>
>>69068474
It was harder as a kid reading it. It is easy now that I appreciate the story more.

I'm a programmer. I'm obsessed with Star Trek. I've DM'd by own D&D 3.5 and 4e sessions with 5-8 players. I play Dwarf Fortress almost daily.

WHY DOES THIS ELUDE ME

What's wrong with that? Is he wrong? He just wants to write a different type of fantasy.
>>
>>69068873
>>69061662
>there’s something fundamentally dishonest about that
if he just wanted to write his own shit that would be fine.. but, instead, he chooses to insult tolkin and claim his works are superior simply because he doesn't like the fantasy genre to contain too much fantasy.
>>
>>69069129
>fine..
didn't mean to include the second period.
>>
>>69069129
Hey man, you're entitled to dislike stuff about others' works. I don't think he's saying that he's better than Tolkien, just that he views writing fantasy differently.

>even more dual wielding faggots
>90% of shire exposition takes place in a brothel with loud moaning Hobbits taking up the entire background
>Frodo spends every scene memeing and drinking
>Aragorn gets shanked by a goblin slave when he gets ambushed in an alley
>Gondor guards hyped as THE elite fighting force in middle earth... rekt by goblins who just picked up a sword
>Arwen kills Elrond because he was too weak to avenge Aragorn's death and go to war with Sauron on his own
>Sauron is just an old guy in a tree
>elven blades can cut through anything and are the only weapons that can kill ring wraith
>ring wraiths show up like twice maybe
>Witch King spends 5 minutes berating Eowyn for being a woman before she kills him... goes on to just travel round abusing plot armor to beat ever increasing odds
>whole chapter devoted to Arwen shitting herself
>Boromir doesn't actually realize his mistake before he dies and instead just doubles down on the "I was right we should have used the ring" thing
>orcs still just as orcish but now with more rape
>Rohan never actually gets around to aiding Gondor and spends the entire series embroiled in its own political drama
>series never actually gets finished everyone just resigns that GRRM is going to die from terminal fats before the end.
>TV adaptation has no idea what the fuck it is doing
>merchandise non-existent
>by the midway point every interesting or enjoyable character is dead and all the remaining characters are boring
>shark jumped in first book, GRRM spends the rest of his life writing fluff that doesn't advance the plot, prequels and killing off everyone he can to a hide his writer'so block
>the fellowship of fire and ice
>a dance of two towers
>return of the dragons

a)He's not a very good writer, he doesn't really think about things he borrows from history and doesn't bother to do research even on things he himself says are important.
b)Criticizes Tolkien, an old Oxford professor who was mainly interested in creating a believable fake mythology for his invented languages to live in, for not writing in the realist or postmodernist style and not including rape and diarrhea as powerful narrative tools.
He's the very model of a modern genre fiction general; he's not very well-read or well-educated but feels like raw talent and experience can make up for it, and as a result he talks a lot of smack.

Mortals go to heaven when they die, whilst immortals get to live forever but eventually get bored. Tolkien called it the "gift of men", where the Younger Children get to go beyond Arda, probably to heaven with Eru.

ASOIAF uses a range of tones to create contrasts. This is where other fantasies often fail. When everything is bright and colorful, then nothing is fantastic. But when you show the grounded and soiled, then the fantastic pops out from that.

george rr martin is a big fat hippie nerd. he loves tolkien and hates war. then he kinda smashed those two opinions together into a book series.

If you read the intro On Hobbits, it makes things pretty absolutely clear that he was a hobbit. I guess you could argue some kind of proto-hobbit, but it was just back when hobbits were less homogenized.
