You're like half right, halfswording was used to get leverage on armored opponents and get them on the ground in addition to inflicting damage with the guard. I don't know why you're talking about the gladius, that's as unlikely to deal any more damage with slashing as any other bladed weapon, you'd have better luck thrusting with a blade against an opponent in plate unless you had a striking weapon like a hammer, pick, etc. almost no blades can easily get through plate with slashes unless they hit with a lot of force like heavier pole arms.
