Tyrion was good early on in the book/show because he was a sympathetic Lannister and a skillfully written portrayal of a bitter outcast person. The quips also helped.
Now more characters have grown about as morally grey, his schitck has gotten old and he has nothing of importance to do within the plot, just like everyone else in Essos. The only interesting thing about him and his wacky adventures in Essos was his descent into self-destructive depression, and they watered it down in the show.

He doesn't. Jon defeats Ramsay's army but Ramsay escapes. Jon recoups at winterfell when all of a sudden the others show up and start laying siege. Ramsay hides in the woods and watches what is happening much to delight but he then proclaims that only he is the one to kill the bastard and the White walkers will not take his glory. He takes his 20 good men to break the siege and defeat the others. They attack from the rear and cut their way through the other's army. One by one the good men die but only after killing hundreds of wights and white walkers ,however, Ramsay manages to make his way through the king and defeat the great other in a duel but before he can finish him off the great other absorbs him and they become one figure. White walker Ramsay then leads the army down south taking over all of westeros and killing everyone.

Show Tyrion hasn't been anything like book Tyrion since season 1. Season 1 was the only time he acted like a total prick to innocent and his good nature was really only on display when talking to children and Jon.
