Yeah, you have a point, none of the characters are really likeable or relatable, except for Elba in his final interaction with Shaw and when he uses his ship as battering ram. The film would have been much better if we had seen them bonding, or if it had spent more time fleshing out the characters. It's too much to cram into two hours though, and I think they didn't include any of that to focus more on the planet and the engineers.

In Aliens Ripley has at least two arcs (fear of Aliens and loss of daughter), there are new great characters, technology and the setting gets fleshed out and we're provided with new details concerning the company and the aliens that matter for the series. It manages to be beatifuly different than Alien and yet clearly in the same series. It's basically the most influential movie of them all and created and distinct look for the entire franchise. Yeah, it turned the xenos into hive drones and took the individual's mystery and intelligence away, just so there could be a big monster boss fight at the end.
Again, I love Aliens and the xeno queen, but it's such a huge departure from the original in so many ways.
Alien 3 was a return to the the tone of Alien; with Hicks and Newt out of the picture (the way it should be in my opinion; it set the mercilessly doom-laden tone of 3 from the start) it's Ripley in a new, alien environment with a new nightmare. I'm not saying that the effects in 3 are great because they have not aged well especially when compared to Aliens, but in terms of tone and atmosphere it's a return to bleak claustrophobia in which the characters have more of an idea of what they're up against but still don't stand a chance.
Alien 3 is not better than Aliens; they do different things in different directions, which is great. Alien 3 is just a closer relative to Alien, and it's a more cohesive continuation.
