You often hear actresses saying they only want to do nude scenes if necessary to the plot/character, but I can't think of an instance where that has been the case. The only type of scene involving nudity that could enrich a character would be a sex scene, but that can easily be done sans nudity with strategic camera placement. I'm by no means upset by nudity, just curious as why an actress would consider a certain type of scene more worthy of their body than another, you know?

OP's note: This thread is not about Emilia Clarke, I just thought the pic was eye catching and suited the thread.
>>
the only nudity that is necessary is pusy slit nudity
>>
Clockwork Orange would be really tamed if they somehow removed all the nudity. I'd argue it's necessary to evoke the proper emotional response in the audience which couldn't be achieved without it. The scenes are very important to the characters and story.
>>
Well that's because you were raised by puritan retards.

What you're forgetting is that movies are supposed to make you feel a wide array of human emotions.

Tittilation and arousal are part of the human experience. Something being sexy is every bit as valid as something being sad or scary or funny. Thora Birch's topless scene in American Beauty wouldn't have been good with "strategic (and distracting) camera angles" because the scene is about voyeurism, making the audience a voyeur. The nudity in Bound works because the scene is supposed to be exciting and taboo and sexy. The nudity in About Schmidt works because its supposed to be confrontational. It wouldn't be if she was holding big watermelons in front of her chest.
>>
>>69009618
A lot of the nudity and non-nude sex scenes debase the show or film. They aren't there for you to experience certain emotions, they're there to appeal to average, dumb viewers.
>>
>>69009618
But you can do sexy with out having an actress actually be nude.
>>
>>69009508
Is clothing ever really necessary on screen?
>>
>>69009508
>Is Nudity Ever REALLY Necessary On Screen
Only if the actresses in question are completely unshaved.
>>
Are we supposed to assume people are never nude?
>>
Most often, you can get away with using implied nudity to achieve the same effectiveness.

However, as has been ruled before, nudity attached to film has been ruled as political speech. Whatever that political speech entails is up to the people involved with the film project. (Pornography being the most extreme example of this.)

The images in a piece of film are only ever as necessary as the specific message or art the directors or writers or actors involved are trying to get across.

So, to answer your question, is nudity ever really necessary on screen? Yeah, probably.
>>
>>69009842
Why would you assume that?
>>
>>69009733
A lot do, but that doesn't mean that it isn't completely valid to have a nude scene to make the audience feel aroused. Op is suggesting that it's inherently cheapening to have nudity for the sake of being sexy, and not just dependent on how it's done.
>>69009772
You can also make your audience feel sad without killing a character. It doesn't mean it should be avoided at all costs because movies often kill characters in a cheap way to provoke a cheap reaction. Good execution is most important. Nudity isn't inherently wrong.

Most of the time nudity just cheapens it to me. I watch them for the story and characters, not to get aroused. If I want to get aroused I'll watch porn.
>>
Nudity is pretty fucking dope. I liked that scene with Dany in OP's picture. She can't even have a moment to herself.
>>
>>69009933
I'd say at times GoT borderlines porn. There's a lot of very erotic moments. Both in the books and in the show. It's part of its appeal to some people.
>>
>>69009869
No nudity isn't wrong. I'm not at all saying nudity cheapens a film. Just why it would be necessary to make an actress show her nips or what have when it is possible go with out it. I said as much in the OP. You can kill a character by having him shot in the head. Yet in that movie you can accomplish that without showing that character get shot in the head.

>Do some historical drama series like HBO's Rome

>Feel a need to include nudity

Literally why? If you made a show about Microsoft and silicon valley, you wouldn't show Bill Gates having sex. It's literally irrelevant.
>>
>>69009933
That's your personal issue to get over. Nudity is a part of life, and there is no reason it should be avoided onscreen.
>>
It's art. Judge each instance individually of its intended merit.

At this point, nudity on screen has become pretty commonplace. Try this though: go to a theater (I know, right) and see a play with nudity. You'll appreciate how powerful of a tool it can be.

Escapism is not incompatible with nudity, so I don't see your point. LotR being fine without nudity doesn't mean it wouldn't be with it. This whole conversation is pointless. Saying something isn't strictly necessary isn't making a value judgement or supporting the judgement with an argument. It's the same as calling the sky blue. No shit, it's blue.

Plenty of actresses don't like doing nudity unless the scene is deemed worthy of it. So there must be something that makes people see nudity as necessary to the plot. Thats the question.

>>69009508
No it's merely used to get ratings. It's awkward and offensive.

The worst part is its female actresses who perpetuate it. They don't have to take the roles or agree to the contacts and until they refuse to do it and until there is not a massive availability of strippers, porn stars and desperate hussies willing to be stand ins and extras it won't stop.
>>
>>69010464
>pretending 90% of the nudity on GOT for example isn't just used to boost ratings.

The makers have admitted numerous times they just throw it in for the sake of it.

You don't have to be a catholic Puritan or a Muslim to find nudity offensive and shocking. Society has morals and standards and nudity is not accepted in open society.

Deal with it you degenerate.
>>
>>69009508
Yes, but not for any of the reasons you see Hollywood use to excuse it.

Nudity has a respected place in the art world, so it often occurs quite tastefully in arthouse cinema.

Unfortunately, it's one of the negatives of American influence on the development of the art of cinema that nudity is either done tastelessly, for extreme drama (as in rape scenes) or not done at all, rather than to enhance a film as an artwork.

To a degree it probably worsens the objectifying of the female body in the West simply by being so afraid to expose people to that form. Ancient artists didn't have any fear of showing us nudity and so you get tasteful nudity - not many people go and fap to the Venus de Milo. There's no slutty perverted feeling to it so it doesn't attract that kind of attention.
>>
>>69011377
>>69011517
On these notes, it's no secret that the majority of the background whores in GOT are actual IRL whores and strippers.

What are you supposed to do when there's a sex scene in a movie at theater? Masturbate? With all the people around?
>>
i love how "sex-positive" feminism just devolved right into neo-puritanism in a matter of years
>>
I know in American beauty, (and spoilers follow be warned) the two lead female actresses both get at least topless, and the director said it was neccesary. One girl is a virgin, and she wears baggier clothes, but when they come off she actually has quite developed breasts and is naturally feminine etc. The other has strong pushup bra game, and has been lying about having sex. So he thought the physicality was important.

Alien SHOULD have had nudity where Ridley Scott wanted it. There's that movie where the guy who plays aragorn is attacked while he's naked and it's apparently brutal (can you tell I haven't seen this one?).

So yeah, it can be justified. Neccesary? I don't honestly know man. Probably not but a lot of other things aren't necessary either and they're in every second movie.
>>
>>69011115
>brain
Neat, another word for my ebon lexicon!
>>
>>69011733
You don't get it. It's sex-positive for the degenerate women, and sex-negative for everyone else.

It's the same shit that always happens with a protected class, from communism to fascism, any authoritarianism just means that whatever rules and whatever ideology that exists on paper will only ever be used against the out group.
>>
>>69009614
Agreed. Though that's as much a function of the character as anything else. Alex would come off as completely sex-crazed as he is if not for the nude scenes.

So for a story like A Clockwork Orange, where sex is a central theme, nudity seems more natural to include.

>>
You often hear actors saying they only want to do violent scenes if necessary to the plot/character, but I can't think of an instance where that has been the case. The only type of scene involving violence that could enrich a character would be a death scene, but that can easily be done sans violence with strategic camera placement. I'm by no means upset by violence, just curious as why an actor would consider a certain type of scene more worthy of their passivity than another, you know?

>>
>>69009508

>>
>is nudity ever really necessary
No, but using this logic, nothing is really necessary in a film, or art in general. Like anything else, nudity can either be used tastefully or tastelessly, with or without supporting context, and either successfully or poorly.

Scenes that go out of their way to hide nudity can likewise either be successful or unsuccessful.
The shower scene in Psycho never shows tits, but nobody cares because its a well-shot scene.

The Zod scene in Batman V Superman has a shot with Zod's entire naked-ass body in frame with Jesse Eisenberg right in front of him covering his crotch. It's cheesy and really obvious that the shot was constructed to cover up his dick, so it breaks immersion.
>>
You often hear comedians saying they only want to do slapstick scenes if necessary to the plot/character, but I can't think of an instance where that has been the case. The only type of scene involving slapstick that could enrich a character would be a pie-throwing scene, but that can easily be done sans comedy with strategic camera placement. I'm by no means upset by comedy, just curious as why a clown would consider a certain type of scene more worthy of their meticulously applied face paint than another, you know?

How deep of you. Your examples are kinda lacking though.

I want to see your artistic film about sexual exploration and depravity without any nudity in. I also want to see your World War II war movie about the battle of Normandy and it's outcome without any deaths. And then sell it to the general population and make it a financial success in theaters around the globe.

Nudity can add things to a scene that you wouldn't get from the same character clothed. It can convey vulnerability, honesty, awkwardness, realism, self-consciousness, toughness, confidence, and sexuality depending on how they're portrayed.

Not saying that nude scenes are always important. In a lot of cases, they are just an excuse to show some skin. But they do serve a purpose when done right.

Plus, it's a nude body. Get over it.
>>
Yes, anytime someone would normally be naked like bathing, changing clothes, etc. Anytime people are getting their fuck on, and sex is necessary if you want to be realistic about relationships to at least a basic extent. Sometimes nudity can a character's vulnerable state of mind, blah blah blah. OP, you're a fucking prude if you think nudity is never necessary. Tits and sex are fine. People get naked and fuck all the time. It's natural. But when it's done prominently without the plot progressing throughout the scene then i might as well be watching a porno. It's too easy a cop out to keep a program/movie's runtime up.

Its very simple:
1: Tits and nudity mean more views for certain genres. That means if you are a woman on said show you better show some tits if you want the job.
2: If a nude scene is necessary you are never gonna notice it as "a nude scene" because in the context of the movie it should have a clear purpose.

If you defend the first instance of nudity you are literally just trash with poor impulse control and the reason why any TV show is being dumbed down in many aspects.
>>
>>69009508
It needs to be more frequent desu
>>
I think that you can make an argument that nudity is necessary if you have a scene that takes place somewhere where it makes sense for the character to be naked, and hiding the nudity would require so many conveniently placed objects and weird camera positions that it would take the viewer out of the movie.

Viggo's nude bathhouse fight scene in eastern promises is a good example. Sure, they could have done some Austin powers bullshit where there's always something in the way of his junk, no matter how ludicrous it may be, but this would have hurt the impact of the scene. The viewer stops thinking about the story and characters and starts thinking about all the silly ways the movie is trying to avoid showing dick. Why not just shoot the scene normally and if some dick gets in the shot, so what?

When it comes to sex scenes, yeah a lot of nudity could probably be removed without it seeming forced. A lot of sex scenes in general could probably be cut without really damaging the film. Still, if you're gonna have a sex scene and don't want to just fade to black, might as well show some tits. People get naked during sex; if you act like they don't you're just ignoring reality.

I guess it just depends on how artificial you want your movie to feel.

Occasionally it is necessary

Sharon Stone's uncrossing of her legs wouldn't have caused the reaction among the police had she been wearing panties or if you'd not seen that she was not wearing panties.

There's a lot of comedy "flicks" that pretty much require the nudity for the film to have the right effect. They're trashy films but without the nudity certain comedic situations couldn't happen.

IMO nudity implies a sense of vulnerability. Just like in real life, when you disrobe you're exposing yourself for both judgement and acceptance. Granted this is not the case in a lot of films because nudity is used improperly, but if used correctly it can be very effective.

A good example is Any Given Sunday, a bunch of swinging dicks in a locker room. Another good example is Airplane! where a pair of bouncing breasts is used for comedic effect.

I'd like to add Starship Troopers. There's a scene in the showers, that are apparently inter-sex in the army, with all sorts of boobies and asses flying around, and yet it felt so natural that I hardly even noticed that they're naked.

I agree, the nudity in Starship Troopers was essentially desexualized. None of the characters felt awkward showering with each other.

Television in general is not "necessary".

>The only type of scene involving nudity that could enrich a character would be a sex scene, but that can easily be done sans nudity with strategic camera placement

the necessity of strategic camera placement breaks the immersion of the scene by repeatedly reminding the audience that you're making a scene in a movie/tv show

what's worse (and they did this a bunch of times in got s5 with danaerys now that EC is too good to show tit) is when they have the actress do the old "well we just finished and i'm alone in my room with the man who just fucked and came inside of me, i better pull the covers up over my boobies to make sure the tv audience can't see them lol"

>They aren't there for you to experience certain emotions
you just arbitrarily disapprove of the emotions they're meant to cause you to experience
