I can't tell if i genuinely liked this movie, or if i just subconsciously pretend that i liked it, because of how critically acclaimed it is.

What does /tv/ think about it?
>>
Would you sit through the 3 hours of movie again?
If you would I guess you liked it, otherwise you really didnt.

I watched it a while ago, but i recently played a game that portrayed samurai as "noble warriors" when they were really just mercenarys trying to make a buck, and i suddenly had a craving to rewatch it.
>>
>>68979407
It's probably my least favourite of Kurosawa's film that I've seen. Granted I've only seen ten.
It's slowly paced but the set up is entertaining.
Maybe I'll have to watch it again.
>>
>>68979540
What are you trying to say?
>>
>>68979583
whats your favorite kurosawa?
>>
In the context of WHEN it was made, it's great.
>>
>>68979407
Of all the film adaptations of Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes, this was definitely one of them. I'd even say it was a great film.

The Magnificent Seven is also a great film (irony: Kurosawa modeled his samurai films on Westerns, intentionally), and Men of War is a fun flick that I like much more than I should.
>>
In my opinion High and Low is Kurosawa's best.
>>
>>68979407
I enjoyed it, but I remember linking Hidden Fortress and Yojimbo a lot more.
I guess it's because this is one of these like Citizen Kane, that they were a novelty when they came out, but now they just feel dated because they have been already done thousands of time.
>>
>>68979407
I liked it, but there are way better Kurosawa films out there.
I think the whole "one of the best films made" thing that comes with this film is just a hype thing.
>>
>>68979407
Yojimbo is better
>>
I enjoy films on a pretty base level and it's just a fun movie duder. The personalities of the samurai are great and that whole fight at the end is sick.

Plus Kurosawa shoots things in a really interesting way that even the stuff without badass swordfighting is good.
>>
>>68979571
>when they were really just mercenarys
Eh, not really, those are Ronin. Samurai was also a title of nobility not just a warrior, they had to serve under a recognized landed lord to be considered Samurai.
>>
>>68979407
its a little too long for me to have really enjoyed it, and the japanese cant write serious characters well. or act, they cant do that either. but its message and story was good. its worth a single watch, nothing more. its great but to call it an enjoyable movie would be a lie for me
>>
>>68979407
Yeah, it's a nice little flick. It makes you care for the characters. It's not gonna give you a blowjob or anything
>>
>>68979971
I respect this man's opinion.

>like Citizen Kane, that they were a novelty when they came out
Citizen Kane was trashed by critics and audience when it came out!

But the comparison in quite good. Both films are praised to be the greatest movies ever because of a number of factors: character study, portrait of characters in their environment, cinematography and many more

Of course tastes are different, not everyone likes slow pacing, heavy story no explosions

Seven Samurai is objectively Kurosawas best, but you are not forced to like it the most.
>>
>>68979407
I worry the same thing about most "good" classic films.
>>
>>68980346
>Citizen Kane was trashed by critics and audience when it came out!

No. Orson Welles was blacklisted but the film was well received. Check Wikipedia.
>>
>>68979407
First time watching it was overwhelming.
Second time I loved every second of it.

I almost feel bad for thinking that Hidden Fortress would be basically unknown had Lucas not stolen from it.

I think it's the most overrated movie I've ever seen. It's fine, that's about it. It's too zany and silly in its characterization. The fight sequences are only impressive for their innovation at the time but now look tame and the fight itself is drawn out and dull.

It's the worst Kurosawa I've seen. And that's saying something because he really wasn't that amazing. That being said Throne of Blood is a masterpiece

whoa dude.
in just one post you have managed to put togheter le patrician and le contrarian meme.

>>
>>68979407
It's one of the worse of kurosawa's samurai movie, but at least watching the actors struggle to show any emotion and then defaulting to throwing themselve on the ground and hitting the dust with their first clenched was entertaining.

At least there's Mifune in it.

I won't sit through too many foreign films, let alone 3 hour foreign films, but I enjoy 7 Samurai enough to watch that fucker every year.
>>
>>68981316

know why that is? because it's basically a big action movie and you're quite obviously a pleb.

Nah....I like the characters, and knowing they were essentially the foundation for countless films that came out after their release.
>>
Japanese filmmaking has always been leisurely paced. More substance than style. It's like chilling out with an awesome green tea with some tiny rice crackers sprinkled in it. Mifune was very atypical Japanese actor for his flamboyancy. Japan are always reserved. That's why Japan action films can be frustrating.
>>
>>68979407
great film in almost all regards.

at least it's not Chungking Express. now THAT is an overrated movie.
>>
>>68979407
I legitimately love it. It's slower paced than modern films, but if you watch enough older stuff you get used to it.
>>68983399
Fallen Angels is such a better film than Chungking Express
>>
Hidden fortress was better. Seven samurai is good but there are definitely better samurai movies out there.
>>
could stare at his photography all day
>>
was Kurosawa at his best in color or black and white
>>
>>
I've never enjoyed Japanese storytelling, characters or acting. That being said, I thought it was great. It honestly didn't feel as long as it was. Kurosawa truly knew what he was doing
>>
>>
>that anti-commie jab at the

It's really entertaining.

I don't know or care enough about film history and stuff to understand why it's so important. But I have watched it a few times and legitimately liked it.

> asking us if you should like a film

I thought it aged very well when I first watched it in the 2000s. I think it was a good movie, but a tad bit too long. Some scenes don't seem to build background, establish themes, or advance the plot. They just feel like they are building suspense to an important scene like the burning building or the final showdown.
>>
>>68984519
Do you have some screenshot from High and Low? Really like that movie.
>>
>>68984549
just a couple, really need to revisit that one
>>
>>
>>
>>
It was more emotionally compelling than I thought it would be when I first watched it
It is a bit goofier than maybe the tone should have been but when things got serious it knew when to stop being silly. I think part of what made it great was it being a watershed for Japanese filmmaking
Its good, but in terms of film it isn't the pinnacle

High And Low>Ikiru>The Bad Sleep Well>Rashomon>Stray Dogs>Seven Samurai>Yojimbo>Red Beard>Throne of Blood>Ran>The Hidden Fortress>Sanjuro>The Idiot>Drunken Angel>Dreams>Dodeska-Den>I live in Fear>The Quiet Duel

All that I have seen thusfar.

It's no Rashomon, but it's alright.

I saw legally blonde when I was 14 in theaters and I am not ashamed famalams
>>
Mifune is probably one of my favorite actors, and his Kurosawa collaborations comprise one of my favorite actor/director dream teams.
alongside Carpenter/Russel
>>
>>68985246
I thought High and Low was really not that good, the photography was great but the story dragged and just wasn't that compelling. Loved the moral conflicts of the first act but it went downhill from there.

Rashomon is my pick for best Kurosawa
