I own all the books, somehow, and this does happen.
They basically miss their window of opportunity to get off the Backwards planet and spend about 10-odd years living with hillbillies.Cat un-loses his virginity to a hillbilly teenager

The books are strange, Essentialy you read "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers", then "Better than Life", and then the writers fell out, so you can either read "Backwards" or "Last Human" to finish the story.
Backwards is the best one.

I *think* in Backwards they never actually get back to that Red Dwarf, do they? I think there's some line about how they parked Earth somewhere.
And then the BDSM androids turn up and then they jump dimensions.
The books were weird. Backwards is truer to the characters and better written, but then when the reset button is pushed it's not 'our' Rimmer and Kryten anymore and everything is a bit shit at the end.
And in Last Human everyone isn't really them in the first place, but they do all get a kind of happy / bittersweet ending.

In Backwards they waste Ace Rimmer so that Cat and Lister can escape to a new universe with a new Rimmer/Kryten, and Lister decides that Red Dwarf is his home.
"Last Human" has some really great Sci-Fi ideas at work, but it loses all the humor and charm in the process. I think it's the same characters, but they don't feel that way at all. Probably a better book though, and at least the ending seems to be less of an ass-pull.
