This movie was fucking depressing. It completely erases all the victories from the original trilogy.
Han and Leia are divorced and their sun is a sith. Han has the Falcon taken away and is exactly where he was 40 years ago.
The new jedi order was slaughtered and the victorious rebellion is still taking it in the shorts.

Certain things could have been handled a lot better, but I'm not sure what people were expecting. The OT told a complete story. Any sequels to it were always going to shit on that feeling of resolution because Return of the Jedi, despite its problems, was pretty conclusive.
I don't disagree with the OP, but it's something that was obvious as soon as the sequel trilogy was announced.

You can't do a beat by beat remake of episode 4 unless you frame the good guys to be the underdog rebellion. One of the worst aspects of that movie.
