Internet jokes aside, who is your favorite filmmaker?
He could set up the tension better than any director, and could combine art and entertainment better than anyone else.

No fuck you. You can't just say that and say 'no bully' like it absolves you from consequence. You have abhorrent taste and you should be shamed for it. You should be bullied––relentlessly.

>implying Hitchcock isn't the greatest British filmmaker
What are you talking, son?
>>68940733
>>68942309
His work is completely generic, there is no personal flair nor dazzle and he uses the same so called aesthetic in every movie. And his political piece on the 'holocaust' is pathetic.
>>68940564
A good pick, as long as you don't' think Vertigo is any better than a worthless piece of shit.

Vertigo is objectively one of Hitchcock's worst films
>>68944967
>>68943580
It's his most formally accomplished and the most concentrated hit of the Hitchcock aesthetic. Not liking it means you don't like or understand what Hitchcock is all about.
>>68944967
Vertigo is easily Hitchcock's magnum opus. It will probably click with you on the second viewing. Read up on the subtext if you really have to.
Zack Snyder and Michael Bay.
The both of them are the only true auteurs of modern film.
showgirls never happened.
>>68945292
I've watched it several times, it's horseshit. Reading about it is far better than watching the fuck, the film is a mess.
>>68945438
I can understand someone not liking the film, but saying that it is a 'mess' really just shows how truly misinformed you are. I struggle to believe that you have actually bothered to read into the underlying themes of voyeurism, masculinity in crisis, film within a film etc. and still have such ludicrous opinions. I'm not saying you aren't allowed to not like the film, but to say it's a 'mess' is outrageous, and quite frankly embarrassing.
I shan't say no more as I imagine it would just result in ignorance on your half. I'm just sorry that you can't appreciate such a multi-faceted work of art by one of cinemas true auteurs.
>>68945357
he has a serious thing for coed showers
i dig that
Why must we choose only one! Its too hard!
After much thinking I have to settle on Francois Truffaut and lets be honest, Hitchcock much as I enjoy his films it was Truffaut that boosted his career.
I love how powerfully mood driven some of Tarkovsky and Mallicks works are, although I've gotten worried about Mallick declining after to the wonder not living up to previous efforts and its stopped me watching knight of cups.
To the poster who mentioned Kevin Smith, is that nostalgia playing a part? I mean I loved the guys works and found them funny growing up but they've dated/aged badly and rewatching them in adulthood I've grown out of them.
I really wish the critics had been nicer on Carpenter back in the day, the man was a treasure to the sci-fi/horror genre they weren't ready for.
To the guy who mentioned Schoendoffer, thanks now I've a new filmaker to explore.
To the verhoeven poster, are you looking forward to the new one he's got coming out with Isabelle Huppert?
Zack snyder is really underated, I will say him just because his work needs to be analised more carefully to be correctly valued
>>68938636
>>68940687
I'm assuming John Ford, in which case, the quiet man is a hilarious guilty pleasure if you're Irish.
The searchers has set the bar too high for me when it comes to westerns.

>>68938636

>>68945078
Before love exposure I was skeptical I'd ever watch a movie over three hours, the command he had over the length of that film and the feelings in it, bloody rollercoaster movie.
>>68946068

>>68946200

That's what makes it so good. The best kind of satire is when the lines are so incredibly blurred so that it attracts the very type of people that it is mocking.
James Cameron and Kubrick. Fuck you if you don't like it.
>>68946224
he disowned those movies anyways, assuming you're talking about his very early work

I'm logging off now, but I'll leave you my reply to your reply if/when I actually get one.
He's certainly one of the most curious filmmakers of recent memory. My favourite is Liverpool; reminded me a lot of Bresson and Tarr. Can't say I cared for his other stuff TOO much, but still, I found them incredibly interesting. La Libertad grew on me, but I'm still not a big fan of Los Muertos. I thought Fantasma was probably the best of that trilogy, it reminded me a lot of Goodbye Dragon Inn.
Jauja for me was quite disappointing, I'd say the first 40 or so minutes were probably among his best moments we've seen from him so far. I seemed to note that it went significantly downhill after that short scene in which he's looking over the cliff and the soundtrack plays. Now, in retrospect, I loved the soundtrack. But it just didn't work in the film at all for me. And don't get me started on the ending.
Anyway it's nice to see people are watching Alonso's stuff, I expect great things from him.
>>68945809
>actually bothered to read into the underlying themes of voyeurism, masculinity in crisis, film within a film etc
You don't need to read into that, it's obvious in the film itself, and all accomplished in pretty much the most artless and hamfisted way Hitchcock has ever presented anything. It's just a meandering, not very good film with lots of ideas in and little else.
The way you type I can tell what kind of pretentious cunt you are, probably literally decide your favourite films on which have the most articles written about them that you've encountered.
Coen bros. haven't seen a film of there's I didn't love yet. Just watched raising Arizona for the first time few weeks ago and thought it was hilarious
>>68946627
Ignorance and ad hominem, just as I predicted.
>>68938636
George Lucas and Zack Snyder
>>68946244
No it's obvious they are one of the best film makers. Only thing I'd judge Kubrick for is his casting choice for the wife in the shining.
>>68945938
Nice meme
>>68944967
"Objectively"
Sorry it doesn't have as much violence as the two or three Hitchcock movies you've also seen besides Vertigo, but this film got the #1 spot in the most recent Sight and Sound poll, which is the closest thing to "objective best film made" that a film can be. It's not my favorite Hitchcock, but you really need to watch this one again.
>No one mentions based King Marty

I feel like I haven't seen enough movies, but as of right now I'd probably say it's a tie between Wes Anderson and Satoshi Kon.
>>68946397
tell me why it's good. it was too long and filled with unnecessary and tasteless scenes. the whole movie was masturbatory pretentious shit. i love sergio leone and i feel bad for what they did to this film when it was first released, but the film sucks, even the unedited version. he fucked up
JJ Abrams

>5 good movies out of 30
nah
>>68946938
I LOVED Taxi Driver, but none of Scorsese's other movies look like they evoke the same feeling.
It seems like he doesn't really have a consistent style.
Krzysztof Kieslowski
A real filmmaker and a real human being
>>68947093
have you seen Raging Bull, King of Comedy, and After Hours?
Also the most qt director
No homo, most directors are ugly
Brian DePalma seems pretty cool.
Carrie was great.
The Fury was better.
Scarface is shit, but that's not his fault. Horrible script and he was the wrong guy for the job.
>>68947144
your favourite filmmaker is based off of two movies he's made?
what the fuck is this
>>68947124
No. I have Raging Bull downloaded, but it's length pushes me away every time I consider watching it.
I don't think I could find a torrent for King of Comedy.
And I just found out what After Hours was about last night, I really want to watch it.
His aesthetic is fucking jaw dropping. I could watch this guy film the streets of Hong Kong for 10 hours straight and not get bored for a single moment. Refn has nothing on WKW's visuals.
>>68947183
it's length? but it's barely above 2 hours.
and no offense mate but it doesn't sound like you're in any position to comment on Scorsese's body of work. you just acknowledged you haven't seen 3 of the movies that would fit in his top 5.
>>68947170
Didn't say he was my favorite, I said it was "pretty cool".
I love his style, especially when he focuses in on the protagonist's eyes.
I love John Carpenter's style too, but I've only seen three of his movies because I hate horror.
>>68946311
>>68946620
Liverpool is my favourite too anon! I love the way small gestures are interpreted in a way that makes them feel enormous. He shoots interiors really well, which is something I hadn't seen from him before, and the progression from the ship to the outside world and back into an internalised environment with his family was amazing
Have you seen his short film Untitled (Letter to Serra)? It's a really lovely short that acts as a bridge between his older films and Jauja
I loved Jauja, the idea of him doing a western is very appealing to me. I felt like he benefited from Mortensen not having a clear destination apart from the goal of rescuing his daughter, it really allowed me to completely get lost in the film and the landscape. He turns the landscape into this mythic entity, which made the jump at the end feel more magical to me. It's not a film I necessarily understand, but one that I can lose myself in time and time again
>>68947274
dude what the fuck

Great to hear! I recall trying to find that film but I couldn't find it anywhere.

They don't explain why Michael is hunting Jamie Lee Curtis specifically until the second movie? What kind of bullshit is that?
>>68947357

>>68947354

>>68947524
I don't unfortunately, I haven't been able to get an invitation.
>>68947357
I get distracted easily too, but only when I'm sober. Alcohol makes it much easier for me to focus on a film, to the point where now I only watch movies after a few drinks.
>>68947568
what's your email anon?

your mind will decline rapidly as you age if you already find it hard to make it through a 2 hour movie

I haven't read a book all the way through in years.
As a kid reading was all I did, I wanted to be a YA author, but at some point I couldn't find any new books to interest me and realized my love for film and other visual mediums.

Halloween is a white people movie so I found it completely unrealistic.
