What did you think about this story?
Is it as good as it's reputation?

Assault of the Benefactors
>>
>>68934847
No. Heaven Sent shows Capaldi going through the whole thing once, and then once you've got the gist of it it fast-forwards through the rest of the process.
Punchline shows the McCoy in the same scene a few different times, with more and more variations each time as he gradually becomes aware that he is in a fiction and refuses to play his scripted role in events, until finally he breaks through to reality..
It's similar, but ultimately different and better. And it would be an occasion to have some GOAT baneposting.

DESU if you haven't watched The Mind Robber your concept of Doctor Who is incomplete.

>The Mind Robber
Terrible story. Completely unimaginative and pseudo-intellectual, with a pro-leftist subtext.
Overrated, frivolous, pretentious, "artistic" drivel.

It's a shame that Power of the Daleks is missing and not The Mind Fuckup.

At least the title is accurate - it robs minds.

I'm probably the biggest Doctor Who fan on this entire image board. I really love Doctor Who and talking about it and also thinking about it. I wish they would get back to a younger Doctor though because the thought of sucking off Peter Capaldi isn't too appealing although I would still do it so that his future (and past? haha because of the time travel nature of the show) self would have me sucking him off in his memory.

How close are we to a third world war?
>>
>>68933961
I don't think it's the time war concept that is the big limitation, rather I think it's the character of the Doctor himself. The War Doctor started out as the kind of character who didn't want to fight in the war but had to, and he ended as the character who didn't want the war to continue so he chose to end it. Maybe I'm just not good enough of a writer but I don't think there are that many arcs of character development you can shove between these two point, the biggest part has already been covered in Engines of War. I have the feeling that the War Doctor will just stay this static Captain Grumpy figure forever, simply with different, interchangeable filler adventures in-between.

>>
>>68937263
Closing Time ends with River in the spacesuit - totally unrelated to the plot of the main episode. Gareth was probably pissed that they tacked on that scene, especially since it was his ep
>>
>>68937172
It's funny because the tacked on scene is sometimes more of an event than anything in the actual episode.

that's exactly the point - the War Doctor is in one niche and character developement is virtually impossible

I guess that's true.. although there was a time when I was looking forward to the continuing audio adventures of the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctor. Maybe it's all down to the companion? Evelyn, Lucy and Hex all made me feel like the different Doctors were still alive in that sense because these characters were able to freely develop even if the doctor would not.
>>
>>68937542

Name one candidate besides trump who is anti-war
>>
>>68937631
The only way to do character development with War would be to depict him at a young stage and suggest he was more of a 'warrior' and less reluctant shortly after regenerating, which would then allow you to tell the story of how he got worn down into cuddly old man form, rather than just staying the same all the way through. Obviously that would come with certain problems for Big Finish.

Literally the only Bill scene we have watched is a hastily written audition sketch with a couple of edits made. I've actually thought a life-line for the War Doctor

>1st era - He's just regenerated and still slips into Doctor persona, this is his unsure phase
>2nd era - He's angry and has settled into his role as a warrior
>3rd era - there is a short period of peace and he attempts to return to his life as the Doctor, this of course fails and he realises he should go and make plans for when the Time war starts again
>4th era - He's become cold and is more like the 7th doctor, a planner
>5th era - this is the day of the Doctor persona, old and weary
>>
>>68937958
Personally I thought he was pretty good with Clara, and River was slightly less annoying with him but not particularly a good duo. I do agree he'd be great with a male companion, but unfortunately Capaldi himself didn't want that.
>>68937969
>>68937923
Yeah, it's too soon to tell for sure, that's just my first impression based on the short scene. I liked her well enough but as a pair they didn't really gel. I could actually picture Bill with some other Doctors easier than I can with 12.
>>
>>68937624
I told you the day she posted it. You didn't listen.
>>
>>68938151
Oh i do, and had done up until Series 8. Which made absolutely no sense.
12s characterization should've meant that he didn't like Clara. He dropped way less irritating characters than her. It made no sense as to why he liked her and let her continue travelling.
>>68938168

Now see here Moffat
I want Series 10
I want Series 10 AND a new companion
I want Series 10 AND a new companion AND a new Heaven Sent
And while we're at it…

I want Capaldi
I want bearded Capaldi
So much beard and so much hair
It would be unfair
To Tom and Jon's great wear
No, now!

I want a Dalek
I want a Cyber
Sleek looking silver and a galaxy glider and a really good writer
Give it to me… NOW!

I want Gallifrey,
I want Ras' my bae
I want to lock it all up in my pocket
Universe it's my rocket
Give it to me…NOW!

I want Davros
I want the Mara
I want to see them all day long in my head and I don't want to lose 'em'

I want a party of the Doctors' laughter
Twelve stories all so extreme
And if I don't get the things I am after
I'm gonna scream!

I want VNA,
I want VNA darkness!
Zygons and Slitheens, and Chumblies and Drahvins, and Oods and Argolins
And now!
Don't care how I want it now!
Don't care how I want it now!

Series 2. Oh my gawd, what was RTD thinking?
>>
>>68939217
I'd say it's 'good acting' even moreso than good writing actually.
So often with poor Danny you'd get to a line and you could just tell Anderson had fluffed the delivery somehow.

I thought everyone would recognize that but now I'm realizing I may be getting old and out of touch

this. remember that scene where clara says she loves him? both jenna and capaldi have the correct reactions but anderson just kind of stands there and looks stupid.

Sadly still happening even in his last appearance. I just got the blu ray of Series 9 and with the subs on for Last Christmas I noticed some of the dream Danny's lines are pretty funny but his delivery's so stilted it kills em. He sounds as if he's cold reading them off cue cards.

>Some things you see are so bad, you think you shouldn’t write for a week in case you’re contaminated. In case it’s got into your head. The sheer rubbishness of the dialogue and awfulness of the story construction. You have to detox. But you read a Russell [T Davies] script and suddenly everything makes sense in an immaculate clean way. So they’re huge influences and pick-me-ups. I read Cucumber years ago for the simple reason that I was stuck on Doctor Who, really tired and having a miserable time rewriting someone’s script. And all I was doing covertly was saying, “Could you send me some good writing I haven’t read so I can remember what it’s like?” It doesn’t mean you then write like that but you go, “Yes! That’s exciting.”

>>
>>68940474
Ha! Oh, do fuck off. Closing Time would've been great if Gareth's ORIGINAL PITCH of having Tenth Planet cybermen got the greenlight.
Moffat shat all over that story. Gareth had huge plans for a grand cyberman story with deep political undertones. But Moffat forced rewrites.

Gareth is an amazing writer. He's so observational, and his acerbic wit is just as fluid as his writing style. He will go down as one of the unsung heroes of Doctor Who. VERY underrated scriptwriter.
>>
>>68939625
Nonsense. The new producers just saw him as a replacement for Ben and Polly because the character had potential.
>>
>>68940570
Well TBF he never mentioned what writer or story it was. It could have been the writer of Almost People or something.

>>68940535
Billie's good in that too. I never found her attractive so she looks about the same to me but Barrowman looks terrible lately. I think he's still in Arrow from time to time and apparently he'll be writing some of the new Torchwood comics.
>>
>>68940570
Roberts' episode lack originality and effort, but they are at least competently written.
I'm willing to bet that was a Steve Thompson script.
>>
>>68940570
Not inclined to think that was Gareth desu. If Moffat had high standards for comedy in Who he wouldn't keep getting Gatiss in.
Do we even know what year he would have read it? Stephen Thompson might be a better bet.
>>
>>68940656
He probably has AIDS now.
>>
>>68939952

Big Finish and writing DW comics. He's having a comfortable early retirement.
>>
>>68940663
>>68940661
The way he says it looks like it happened quite a long time ago so no later than 2013 and Thompson came back in 2014.
>>
>>68940618
>Gareth had huge plans for a grand cyberman story with deep political undertones. But Moffat forced rewrites.
I doubt it, but one thing we do know is that Gareth wanted much more of a horrific aspect to the presentation of the Cybermen. Craig's conversion was meant to be properly fucked up with knives and shit flying everywhere, but the prod team shut him down because kids' show/possibly budget. Source: Phil's interview with him
